Title: Doin' it myself
Post by: topherloaf on June 11, 2010, 00:31:49 AM
So, being broke and wanting to save the bulk of my moneys on the dual seat and belt drive conversion I've decided to wire my own ignition relocation.  I bought a Harley-Davidson switch off the bay, going to buy the dash plate from J&P unless I find the scrap metal to do it myself, and a resistor and do it my darn self thanks to the fourm topics listed on here.  Wish me luck. (when it all gets shipped to me...lol)

Either way...any suggestions or helpful hints?  Thanks!!!

Chris

good luck, let me know how it goes, I would really like to do those conversions also, but would have to be by myself, can't afford more professional labor in the bike right now

I think as long as the switch fits in the "kawasaki" spot on the dash plate under the three lights, I'll be good to go.  I bought an OEM replacement Road King/Wide Glide switch, it'll come in the mail sometime this week probably.  I think it'll be fun to do.

The switch came today, anybody know where I can buy a 100 resistor?  Online or are there any stores I can walk into?

I saw the new Indian's switch while at Americade; it's a flip up chrome cover with a circular key, 90 degree turn to on; and then, remove the key with it in the on til you stop, get the key out of your pocket or wherever you lost it, and turn it 90 degrees the other way.
So, I know that sometime, I'd have to stall it because I'd lost the key while riding and have to leave it with all power on including the lights, til I found another key or cut a wire.  Imagine walking away to get a tow truck?
Dash mounted like Harleys.
I'll stick with my Drifter and don't have $27,000-35,000 for a 'real' Indian.
The friggin' massive headlight is hogged out of billet!  The seats are real western saddle leather, natural.  Amazing detail; looks Gucci.  I'd be afraid to jump on without checking that I'd put on my tedlar jumpsuit so the fabric in my jeans wouldn't buff the gloss off the leather!!!
Nuts,

See, if I mount my dash switch, install a belt drive....there's not much left on it besides fuel injection that's not a "modern style" indian besides of course the brand name at well below half the price.  And, it's more fun to me personally to piddle with it and make it "mine" and unique.

Thunder Mfg. acutally has the wiring instructions on their website for the 800.  I called yesterday and asked if they still sold an 800 switch or at least the wiring and they said there wasn't enough demand for it so they ordered 1000 and sold them.  They guy also told me they don't even have a plug in harness anymore and to wire it myself with their harness would've cost me $100.  Sooooo, he left a message for another guy and he directed me to the wiring instructions for the 800 and I should be up and installing sometime this weekend or next.  Just have to buy some extra wire and the 100 ohm 1/2 watt resistor (5 pack for .99 cents at radio shack).  I'll let you all know what happens!
