Has anyone removed the carbon filter canister located behind the left side cover? What all is involved in that; anything besides disconnecting the hoses? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank in advance;
Regards, Fred
Have a look in the mods area of the website...
Look here: http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/reviewpost/showcat.php/cat/57 (http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/reviewpost/showcat.php/cat/57)
Thanks, Chief, I looked but could not find anything on that subject; maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot?

The last two articles in the mods section I provided tells you how to remove all of the smog stuff.
Only California bikes have that canister.
Take the seat off and look at the back of the fuel tank. On CA bikes there are two lines. One runs to the left, one to the right. Remove those. Get about 3 feet of vacuum line the same diameter and run a line from the right side vent. Drop it down behind the motor (the way non-CA bikes are setup). So one end is attached to the tank, one end is open. Now use a vacuum cap on the left side vent.
The lines you removed from the tank run to a separator which has a line running to the intake manifold. You need to plug this line, or replace it with a vacuum cap like the one Kaw uses on non-Ca bikes. I have seen a part number 92068-006 used. But most auto parts stores will have vacuum caps that will work. The cap goes on the intake manifold, of course... not the line.
There is also a line running from the canister to the left side air cleaner backing plate. Remove that and fill in the hole... silicone or something like it will work.
If you just want to disable the system just plug up the left side vent line from the tank and run the right side one as described.
Also if you want to remove the canister and keep the separator: (Courtesy of Tom E)
Removing the charcoal cannister, while keeping the vapor separator is VERY easy to do.
On the charcoal cannister there are two hoses. One runs up from the vapor separator and has a 180-degree hook on the end. The other goes to the intake crossover tube.. I think it has a 90, but I could be wrong.
Disconnect both hoses and put the cannister in a box.
Trace the hose that goes to the vapor separator... small cylinder with 4 hoses on it in front of the battery box. Pull the hose from the top of the vapor separator and pull it out of the frame.
Now flip the hose upside down. Put the 180 bend onto the fitting on the top of the vapor separator and route the hose out the bottom of the frame. The end of the hose will almost perfectly line up with your coolant overflow hose.
Now the other hose in the side compartment... pull it up into the area under the seat and cap it. Most people will smear a little Permatex on a screw, stick the screw in the hose, and snug it up with a hose clamp.
This gives you the best of both worlds... you can now fill your tank all the way to the top, but if you DO get overflow, the vapor separator will pump the liquid fuel back into the tank, rather than dumping it on the ground.
Even if you completely remove the system, there are no visible hoses that would be removed.
Thanks for posting this, Chief; try as I might, when I click on the link you provided, all it will give me is the info on marbling, and removal of the reed valves and connected "plumbing"; no info on the carbon filter canister that I could find. However, the info you put in your reply will work.
Thanks;
