Anyone here have experience removing the front fender on a 1500? Mine is a 99 model. It appears that the wheel has to come off. Since Drifters lack center stands. I plan on getting my lift under the frame to pull the wheel ? I'll read your responses before I go ahead. The reason to pull the fender is a chunk was blown out of the lower back and it will be repaired. Thanks, Vinny
Yep you gotta remove the front wheel and yes you need to support the bike. A lift works fine.
- Remove Front Wheel
- Remove mounting bolts on both sides to separate the fender from the forks
- Remove the fender
REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
- Remove the brake caliper with the hose installed
- Loosen the axle nut
- Lossen Front Axle clamp bolt
- Put your lift under the frame and ensure the bike will be balanced with the front wheel. Book says to use two jacks but a lift with a wide base will work if you position it properly. I usually put something under the rear tire after its lifted.
- Remove front axle nut
- Pull out the axle to the right and drop the front wheel out of the fork, while tilting the wheel a little.
- WARNING: Don't lay the wheel directly on the ground with the disc facing down. This can damage or warp the disc. Place blocks under the wheel so that the disc does not touch the ground.
I recall some folks indicate the can take the wheel and fender off together, but that seems pretty burdensome to me.
Hope this helps.
Thats perfect Chief, just what I needed. Great detail in your instructions. I will pull the fender this week to send it for repair and painting. Thats the only real blemish in an otherwise clean Drifter. should I post pics that can made into a tutorial ??
Thanks again, Vinny
Put the bike in first gear. Then, put your lift under the frame to the front right as far as possible, under the rt. front brake pedal. Works the same for the rear tire, under the rear right frame,
Varooom
Yep pics would be great and we can put them over on the tips area of the website. Thanks.
