Have a 2000 800 and the side stand drags on left hand turns. It this normal? It seems like there is a lot of play (left and right) in side stand it but the hardware seems tight. Tried to tighten and loosen it last night and I couldn't get anything to move.
Not normal. Has the bike been lowered?
Is the stand arm tight up against the base? Can you tell if the plate has shifted?
If I take a corner in town real short my stand will drag also. Never had it happen out on the road in sweepers though.
When I bring the side stand up it will go all the up to the frame but it will not stay there. I don't think it's the spring, tried to see if I could easily remove the spring and it's not gonna come off with my bare hands. There just seems to be a lot of play in it like a bushing is missing or has broken down but the tech diagram doesn't show there is one. Maybe the top of the side stand has "Y"ed causing it to sag. Put some penetration oil on the bolt last night and hopefully this weekend I can get it apart.
What did you find out?
Mine goes all the way to the frame also but does not stay there. It drops down a little.
I have the same problem with my 99 1500, the spring is weak causing the stand to sag. Removal is easiest when stand in folded, have someone sit on the bike to hold it upright. I plan on ordering a spring along with other small items in future trip to my local dealer. -Vince
I also have a 99 1500 and the stand drags just about all the left turns. Scared the crap out of my and the wife first time it happened. I figure it'll just wear down eventually. LOL ::)
Finally got some time to look at my dragging side stand. My plan was to remove the side stand to figure out why it wouldn't stay closer to the frame. After jacking and strapping the bike I attempted to remove the bolt. Even with a couple applications of penetrating oil the last few weeks it fought me. I turned the bolt about 1/2 rotation counter clockwise and she froze up on me but I noticed my side stand was a lot close to the frame and most of the play was gone. The side stand goes up and down smoothly and is not binding so for now I am going to leave it and see how she does. I'm afraid if I torque it much harder I could break the bolt. I did hit it with my penetrating oil and I will probably get a spare bolt (and nut) before I wrench on it again just in case. Nothing worse than being not able to ride because of a $2 part.
Musta shifted a bit during the process... works for me!
Yeah it nice to drag the left floorboard instead of the kick stand. Did that today on the way home today...LOL
