ok, I have a 2002 800 drifter, with the fringed solo seat, how does this thing come off?
silly story, the other day when I came home I didn't get the key turned off all the way so now the battery is dead. My mechanic says he put on one of those deltran connectors so I can hook up my battery tender but I can't find where he hid it, so I thought I could trace it out off the battery......the battery does hide under the seat right? help? I know, its sad, I work at the bike shop but that alone says how spoiled I am, those guys take such good care of me, barring my own stupidity.
There is a triangular piece on each side of the bike at the side of the seat. The bottom of the pieces have two bolts holding them to the frame. there is one bolt in the top section of each piece. These are the bolts that you remove to take off the seat.
maggie, you'll see 2 chrome bolts direct;y under the seat(in my picture). remove both sides, then the cover over the battery box.

evidently just above those 2 big chrome bolts is a smaller 8mm black one that is easier to remove, unfortunately my tool bucket with its misc girl tools doesn't have a socket that fits those big ones, but I got the seat off, and had to replace the battery. the other one after trickle charging on a battery tender for 3 days would not pass a load test. YAY for my working at a dealership employee discount. Now we start and run just fine, reparked and recovered the truck, and I am back on the bike!! Bikers RIDE baby, Bikers RIDE!!
my birthday is coming up, so I have hinted to the hubby I don't have enough of the right tools. We will see how that goes

It's a good idea to carry a small ratchet and sockets to get the seat off and the battery terminal bolts off. (These stow on my 1500 under the side cover wrapped in a clean rag for cleanup and to prevent them from rattling around.) This way, if you're away from home and your battery dies, you can access it for the AAA guy to jump or charge the bike rather than having to have it towed just for that.

Speaking of jumping a motorcycle battery. Never jump from a car or truck that is running. Always make sure the car or truck is off and you are drawing only from the car or truck battery .

yip good reminder there, a car battery on a running car will blow up a motorcycle/powersports battery
