My understanding it is a loud ticking sound.

Well, what I'm hearing isn't a "ticking" sound.  It might just be the stock exhaust and the standard noisy Kawi motor.  Maybe some after market exhaust is in order.

Take a look here, tells how to inspect. It is an easy job to do.

What are the indications of the cam chain tensioners needing to be "extended"?
I ask because my 99 1500 has an odd "rattle" under fairly hard acceleration or on take off.  Sounds like it's coming from the front cylinder.  Has just over 10K on the clock.
