Rob, thanks for your post about that. I didn't realize that with wear the clearances are tightening, but that's like this KTM I used to have which didn't get more clearance but less as the valves hammered themselves into the seats more and more. It's a little disconcerting because you're thinking that you're going to hear the ticking when the valves need to be checked but apparently things are just going to get tighter and go south.
By the way, I'm sorry the Dynojet kit didn't prove worth its cost for you, because for me well I only paid $55 and man what a difference it made it was like the best 55 bucks I could spend on my bike, which would barely run prior to rejetting
Sorry for butting in on the topic, but I seen "valve clearance" and just thought i"d elaborate on that. I recently redid the carb with a dyno jet kit and because i was right there i decided to check the valve clearance. When i got the bike back in Dec i was doing maintenance and decide not to check the clearance then, as most guys have been saying that they don't change that much plus i only had 24,000kms . Well i am here to say that i am glad that i did because 3 out of 4 exhaust valves were under min specs. Intakes were fine. Oem shims were $15 each( kinda pricey but need them). I had done the shims on a yami royal star venture a while back and was not fun ( 16 valves and a special tool needed) The drifter was a piece of cake. Just one tip though.......... take a rag and block off the opening to sump next to the cam chain (you don't want to drop a shim down there!)
BTW.... the dyno jet kit wasn't worth the $100. Lot of work and cost for minimal gain of power.
Rob
Okay fair enough, I won't worry about it. and that explains why it's not mentioned in the manual
I may be wrong but I believe they are self adjusting.
There is nothing in the PM schedule for this. Apparently, 800's have fewer cam chain tensioner failures than the 1500.
This might provide you with some info.
Hey I know we're supposed to check our valve clearances periodically but I can't see anything in the service manual or my owners manual about timing chain tensioner adjustment. Do you guys know if that has to be done as well? On my other bikes it's been a simple matter of loosening up the tensioner lock bolt and letting it reset itself with the spring tension inside, and I see what looks to be the same set up on my drifter's cylinders.
