Drift-In 2013 will be in Helen, Ga. July 17-20

Hotel info is 59.99 a night you have until Dec 31 to get this rate. They have 37 rooms that we can get they are holding a block of 20 but if we fill up the motel that will be good. here is the link to the Hofbrau River Front hotel.

http://www.riverfronthotel.com/ (http://www.riverfronthotel.com/) just tell them you are with the VDOG group to get this rate after Dec 31 the rate goes back up to 89.00 a night.

Wait, seems like I made almost his same trip about 2 weeks ago, going to Kentucky..

Oh, I turned the job down, it would have involved a massive paycut...

Note to future employers...

Don't offer a job, then figure out you can't afford me.....

So I am still stuck in miss a hippy... Yes I spelled it like that on purpose..

If 49 is coming, I've got to try for sure. It would be cool to ride down with the Canadians. I wonder if RatMan will be able to make it. Only 470 miles from me. That was a surprise. I'm coming.

Might have to ride slower for Ratman to keep up, but we could do that. Couldn't we, boys? ;D

ok that is 1789.2 kms converted to 1111.7877 miles.....one way........so do that in about 18 hours non stop, or do a 10 hour ride with a night to sleep and then a 8 hour day, so latest I could leave would be the 15th at 0600 here and head out, return trip would be at a nice easy ride.....

QuoteMight have to ride slower for Ratman to keep up, but we could do that. Couldn't we, boys?

Now why would that be?  I can ride at the speed limit too, and why rush......relax enjoy life....

but it depends I might be having a major change in life style this spring and this might fit right in with the plans......some thing to plan for ....

Driftingirl, never too far if you leave enough time to rest......

I don't know if are planning on coming to Helen GA next July for DI 2013 or not but I just wanted to let you know that the dead line for the $59 a night that the VDOG is getting at the hotel ends on Dec 31. So if you plan to attend Please call the Hofbrau River Front Hotel
They are holding 20 rooms at this price until Dec 31 the then price goes up to $89 a night, the hotel only has 38 rooms and so far we only have reservations for 10 of the 20 rooms.

Know  exactly where that is!  Used to run a micro sprint over that way...have to keep in touch as it gets closer...I think Tom and I are the only drifters over this way.....looks like one up in Grand Rapids and a few down by Indy....would be neat if we could gather 6 or so of us up....

Ok, so as we r getting closer, my "other half" has a dilema...his poor back will not take that far of a ride on his 1500 drifter....soooo we can either trailer or he can ride the Harley (which is better on his back).  Hate to trailer, as I prefer to ride and the trailer is 32'!  We do however have friends in TN about 2 hours or so from Helen, so maybe trailer to there n then ride the rest?  Thoughts?

Just made the reservations at Hofbrau Riverfront - 706-878-2184 - THEY HAVE 23 ROOMS BOOKED THUS FAR! And - they are still giving the discounted rate!

That's good to know. Booking a hotel 8 months in advance seemed to be a pretty risky move. Chief: do you have any idea what the itinerary for the 17th might be? I'm trying to set up my timing so I don't miss something important.

Ok, I just pulled the trigger on my room reservation. they are quite excited, judging by the person I talked to, about hosting this event. The discounted rate still applies, so...they have 35 rooms, and 24 are now booked!

Just booked mine as well.  Told them I was with the rally and didn't even ask for the group rate, he just gave it to me.  As a Sconnie lad living in Florida, I'm hoping Troll can regale me with tales from the land of cheese.  You guys should be thawed out by July.

What's the deal for everyone?  Are you going solo, or bringing your sig other?  Not sure if I should bring the old bat my beloved along or not, if I do end up going.

I just booked my room, at the discounted rate....just a little over 500 miles for me....

my husband and I went to every bike rally we could get to through the years, Sturgis 50th...Daytona 50th...and anywhere we heard of something happening we were packed and ready to go....on July 30 we would have been married 24 years(we'd been together 30) ...and I have a little voice in my ear telling me to.. pick myself up, shake myself off, and go enjoy....sounds like a good way to celebrate the lifestyle we enjoyed together... and from there.... start moving forward....

Since he passed I have been asking myself...where do I go from here...what do I do now...and when do I take that first step towards....whatever  ::)..yada..yada..yada..

I came to this forum looking for answers to questions about my motorcycle....well....those other 3 questions I've been asking myself...have also been answered...a bike rally...for Drifters...how freakin' awesome is that ;D....THANKS YA'LL...see ya's in July.... :)

Answering soul-searching questions.  Drifter, is there anything you can't do?  Now the only thing left to do now is...wait 2 and a half months.  Crap.  Looking forward to it big time!

DC, I'm planning on going solo, but a buddy may tag along.  He rides a Harley, but I don't hold it against him...

Wondering what the scheduled events for the drift in are. i don't live far from helen and would like to attend some events.there are a lot of good rides in north ga mountains like ga hwy 180(the most curvy rd in ga) ga hwy 197(nice twisties along lakes rabun and burton)us hwy 129 n to blairsville(up the mountain and down the other side) all a easy ride from helen. in my opinion the excitement is not in helen but the roads and hwys around it.it is fun to tube the chattahoochee river through helen on a hot day and grab a few beers but it don't make my heart pound like thoes mt roads.

Hey folks - don't freak out!

When/If you call to confirm your reservations - or to make reservations -  you need to make sure to tell them you are with the Drift -In or VDOG or McNealy Group Booking.

The reservations are there, under the group so that you get the group rate.

FYI - they do still have just a couple of rooms left and they will honor the $59/night rate!  706-878-2184

Well we are definitely making the trip - leaving from NE Indiana.  The only question really is are we trailering or riding?  If we ride down I will bring the 800 and Tom will ride the Vaquero (easier on his back) - if we trailer then he will bring the 1500 drifter - -but then he got the sidecar done and he really wants to bring that too - - but then we'd have to bring the big trailer....so not sure what the hell we're doing - other than definitely going =).  Suggestions?

OMG!  That sidecar is 9000 steps beyond cool!   8)   8)   8)

Just curious, does the prop turn at all?

Did you/your husband get those rims powdercoated or straight spray painted?  How does the paint hold up on those?  I'm thinking of doing a similar thing on my rims, but I don't know how the finish will hold up.
Title: Re: Drift-In 2013
Post by: racemom91 on July 03, 2013, 07:32:52 AM
The rims are powder-coated - this project was started a year and a half ago and just finished about 2 weeks ago - - - been ridden four or five times since complete.  I will try to post a before and after on here.  You wouldn't believe the amount of pieces on this bike/sidecar that were from swap meets and junk piles!  The "guns" are/were chair legs - seriously.  Yes, the propeller turns.  We have it pinned except when riding in town as at about 35 mph it gets really scary sounding....afraid we're gonna burn out the bearings.  I'll post a link to the facebook album.

He really wants to bring it....I don't want to drag a 32' trailer....

He bought his drifter after our son totaled his victory.  He had ridden my 800 (our first drifter) and really liked it, so went looking for a 1500...and then added a few little things...we get bored in Indiana over the winter...
Title: Re: Drift-In 2013
Post by: racemom91 on July 03, 2013, 07:52:32 AM
The Vaquero is a recent addition - we traded another bike on it - it's the one he rides when comfort is a factor...with a bad back the ride is now very important for anything over about an hour....and on the plus side it fits me too for the days when I just want a bit more power!  Very nice bike and it was a deal we just couldn't refuse....probably gonna stay stock though.  Really this is the bike he wants there with us to ride daily....but wants to show you all his hard work on the others!

The next project is going to be a "rat bike".  Ok, well after I get the one done I'm working on now - a 1500 that will be carbon fiber wrapped with apple green metallic striping - it's for sale, or it will be if I ever get it done. =)

We aren't driving as far as most of you only a measly 210 miles. I'm impressed with the with the all the iron butts out there.

I almost caused a disaster. I washed my bike in preparation for the trip to Helen. I decided to take it out and get it all buggy again (around here, a quick ride up the river is all it takes). I just checked the forecast for next week in Helen...let's hope it's correct!

Is there any way I can check to make sure this got done along with getting my t-shirt ordered???  I do have a room at the hotel for me and David and Sandy already booked though.  Looking forward to another great gathering!!

Friday was a little field trip to the Dragon. Not everybody went, but those who did felt it was the most fun you could have with a motorcycle and your clothes on. One thing I'll bet would be hard for most people to realize..there are no straight roads around here. Typically, if you follow 2 seconds behind another rider, they have disappeared around the next bend....The last picture is called the tree of shame...no Drifter parts there!
On the way there, we literally rode into a rain cloud at the top of the Cherohala Skyway

That's pretty cool, Troll.  Wish I was there.

The Dragon was the one thing I really wanted to do.

Did anybody ever get a count of Drifter riders for the weekend?  Got any names to go with those faces??

Inquiring minds want to know....

Has next year's location been set yet??

I have noticed one thing right off in the pictures. I have been to 2 Ride For Dad's this year and the Biker Reunion in New Liskeard, noticed that all them Drifter Riders and not one pair of chaps, yet at the rides and reunion all the Harley riders were leather encased in chaps and vest and jackets no matter the temps. or the weather. Wonder why?

I personally do not like to wear chaps. As far as all Harley riders wearing them I think it is because Harley says u need to..... to be cool...... I dunno :o

I have chaps and use them up here in the cool weather on long rides or damp mornings. But on a nice warm day and dry outside then I do not wear them.

Really enjoyed my first Drift-In. Met some great folks, seen some awesome Drifters, enjoyed the beautiful tourist town of Helen, Ga and the beautiful country of N.C. and Ga. Rode through some cool little towns and met some of the nicest people on my rides. Got soaked on the way back going across a mountain in N.C. ...that was cool.  ;D

Already lookin' forward to next years Drift-In............
Hope everyone made it home OK?

Ya Hoo! Twisty roads, beautiful scenery...and next year, it's going to be in Maggie Valley...that's almost a hundred miles closer to me!  Ratman, start saving your crowns, shekels, pounds, or what ever for the trip!
I'm not home yet...made about 500 miles today. More thunder storms going across Kentucky slowed me down a bit.  Here's a picture of DK and Bikermom..without a mirror across her face....and an 800 sidecar rig!
The group picture only has 20 bikes in it..there were actually 26, but some people left before the ride, and the guy with the side hack has 2, he brought his 1500 on Friday for the ride to the Dragon..

How was the Dragon?  I was wanting to ride on that....

Looking forward hopefully to next year, looks to be about an hour closer to me.  Got a date?

Awesome first Drift In for Tom and  I!  Despite some mechanical issues, I made the best of it and had a wonderful time, met lots of great people and can't wait to see you all again!  Terri and John, David and Sandy, Terry and Suzie and sooo many more of you - you are all wonderful.

It was nice to be with a group that is REALLY accepting of everyone - some of the group did all of the group rides, some did some of the group rides and other times went off on their own way, and some really didn't get out and ride with any of us much until the last day (picture day) - some of us like to ride "balls out" and see how fast we can take the curves, others of us (like me) prefer to just take it easy and actually see the terrain (I may not make it back again - why miss it?) - and none of it mattered - we all ended up back at the pound having a great time by nights end!  It IS, for most of us, the only vacation we get!  I only regret that there was not another group photo done at the bike show - per the itinerary...would have been nice to have everyone in one pic - but that's how the ball bounces and probably everyone wasn't there either.  I haven't looked at my pics yet and my camera went dead in the middle of dinner on Saturday night - boo.

Oh - and before I forget:  A huge THANK YOU to all of you that worked so hard to try to get me back to 100% - you all know who you are! - Randy, John, Jo Bear, Troll, Danny, Mac.... (if I missed anyone I am sorry) - it was better and I was able to continue to ride Friday and Saturday and we will get those bearings replaced this week!  I guess I got my workout for the weekend, lol!  (And I apologize again for holding everyone up on Thursday!)

Chief - don't know if you need any help or not for Maggie Valley, but I may have some connections that could benefit us...let me know if you need me.

Hope everyone made it home safe and sound.  Can anyone tell me how to access the drift in pics on the drift in website?

There are three web sites that took pictures of us on our little Dragon trip. The day was Friday the 19th, the time was about 1 pm...should put you in the ball park....Two of the sites list them as Cruisers and dressers, one of them goes by the time
http://www.us129photos.com/#axzz2Zp1QvjKW
http://129slayer.com/129Slayer/129_Slayer_The_Dragon_Photo_Specialist_on_US_129.html
http://killboy.com/
Of course, they want to sell them to you...the prices aren't THAT bad....Hmmmmm
There WERE 20 Drifters for the group photo, but there were 26 there for the rally. some people had to leave before the photo session...

I did a quick video...so the still pic is good, but watch the action shots! The first time through (we did it twice, back to back) for some reason one of the video sections either didn't record, or I missed transferring it from the camera, but on the way back, I got it all. The video I'm posting is 6:37 long. The actual ride from in to out is closer to 15 minutes, since it's 11 miles and mostly the speed is around 40 or so. It's all done in 3rd gear, and down to second for the hairpins....Yes, that's a water drop on the lens...must have fallen from one of the trees...eventually blew off. The resort store has an incredible amount of souvenir stuff for sale, all centered around the ride. I bought 2 license plate frames, one for each bike...For those of you into scenery...the last picture is the view outside my room.    Here it is...about half the Dragon!

Thursday morning, we all took off for a "moderate" skills ride...I'll let you be the judge. As a side note, most of the 500 miles I rode with the groups was done in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear...there's not enough straight road to get to 5th...

Hey Troll, on a trip that long, do you plan out a better "nice" riding route (e.g. state highways, etc.) or do you just plan to have to use the interstates, in the interest of time??   Just curious....
Title: Re: Drift-In 2013
Post by: Troll on July 27, 2013, 07:23:36 AM
Usually, I do a little of both kinds of roads. Since there was a time constraint for Wed. I took Interstate most of the way, but I did run along some mountain rivers through the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee  and North Carolina, then down 129 to Helen. On the way back I took a totally different route from Helen to Dalton, Ga. and back mostly to Interstate. If I don't have a set destination, or time table, then I figure out a mix of roads and just go....
Title: Re: Drift-In 2013
Post by: greenbarn on July 27, 2013, 07:32:24 AM
That's kind of how I figured it.  I was just looking at routes for next year's location.  It'a about a 7.5 hour trip via interstates.  I figured unless I wanted to make it a 2-day trip, it pretty much needs to stay on the interstate most of the way.  I'll look for "short cuts", though.... ;D

I don't know what kind of cameras they use, but you can count the ventilation holes on my gloves as I rode by at like 40....Here it is resampled to 40% Too bad you guys got in so late on Friday and missed this ride...it was OUTRAGEOUS!

As promised, I have been working on the DVD of the rides. I am happy to announce that I'm finally satisfied with the quality and content. The format is dual layer DVD, approx. 8 Gbytes. I chose to use the larger capacity disc and do some edits (I had almost 6 hours of raw video) rather than run a compression format and lose video quality. I tried the prototype on my ancient lite-on DVD recorder, and it worked just fine (didn't know it could even read dual layer). I know it will work on any computer running XP and later, and probably most linux systems...and certainly any newer dvd readers that can digest DVD+ (constant bit rate). The DVDs cost me $2.50 each, and there will be postage, so if you want one...   troll@charter.net
Not trying to make any money here. Just want to provide a different point of view of Drift-In without LOSING any money on the deal.

I can loop that and then watch for hours in the living room this winter on my new seat and really get the feel for the seat and the roads in aMerica. Then petemoss and GreenBarn will not be embarassed by me.

It's a dual layer DVD, and everybody has been giving me $10 to cover materials and postage...  They have been sending it to my paypal account.  troll.sys@charter.net    I need your shipping address as well as your money!
