Hello Everyone.......I hosted Drift-In 09 in Cherokee & now I am Hosting for a 2nd time in Maggie Valley, NC.    Just wanted to keep you all updated.

The Official dates for Drift-In 2014 will be:   August 13-14-15-16    To many events going on in June and rates were high at all motels and it just wasn't a good time to have the rally.   Some said that July was not good for them so it left August.

I searched in person about 12 possible sites for the Dog Pound and many where too high dollar, rooms were crappy, no pool or wi-fi, not enough rooms to hold us all, some people just were not really wanting the biker crowd.   I did notice that most motels in Maggie Valley are now 100% smoke free in the rooms.

I did find just the right place for us on Monday and the owner offered me deals on rooms that were 30% to 50% off of what others were charging for below standard rooms.    The owner wanted the Drifter Riders and she showed me that in prices.   I will announce the price details in the next few days.

This is what we have now:   45 units total.   Half the rooms are Creek side and this is a big white water creek & they have private balconies overlooking the creek with rocking chairs.    The standard rooms do not have the private balconies.  This is a 2 floor Lodge.   All rooms are NO SMOKING, but you can smoke outside in front of your room or on your back deck (creekside) or anywhere on the property.   PLEASE NO FLICKING BUTTS ONTO THE PARKING LOT OR YARD.   If you smoke in your room, then you will have to pay $100 times the amount of nights you stay.

Between the lodge and the creek are 3 fire pits with plastic yard chairs around each one.    We can build fires and owner will supply the wood.   You will be sitting 3-10 feet away from a rushing white water creek.    There are grills back there for our us to use.    Now the rushing creek out back is also full of Trout......so fishermen....bring your rods and reels!!!!

There is an indoor pool that is open all night long (never closes).   There's also a small play set area for the kids.   Most rooms will have awesome mountain views to look at on a rocking chair in front of the room.   For all you intellectual types, there is a big room next to the office with nice furniture, couches, recliner, chairs....just one huge room.

There are places to wash our bikes.   An ice machine & a Pop machine.   There is also a laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers...very nice updated ones.  Many other biker clubs stay here year after year.

This Lodge is also rated the 3rd BEST hotel/motel to stay at in Maggie Valley.   The rooms are large, very clean and toilets are the elongated ones.

Some rooms have Jacuzzi tubs, some are Kitchenettes, some are standard king, 2 queens, 2 doubles.   There are 4 units that are perfect for families and have rooms opening into another room.   If you are going to bring your kids, ask the owner about which room will suit you and your family best and she will work with you.   Each room does have a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker.   There is also a 2 bedroom apartment.
  No pets allowed.

There is a 7 day minimum notice to cancel or you get charged for one night.  When I post prices of rooms in 1-3 days, I will post the link to the Lodge and you can see the room prices yourself and you will be shocked at the prices the owner is giving us.

This Lodge has everything for our group.   There is a gas station 100 feet away that sells beer and a state store down the road.   There is also a small night club across the street.

Drift-In 2014 is going to be a blast and full of surprises.   You all need to be here for this.   There will be rides for all levels of riders, discounts for attractions, am working on a band to play for us.    You will all have a rare opportunity to see a 911 Memorial that has (2) I-beams from the World Trade Centers.  Don't forget that Wheels thru Time Motorcycle Museum is here in Maggie Valley.

Mark your calendars now and make your reservations right away.   If you want quiet at night, then reserve a standard room.   If you want to hear a rushing white water creek and everyone talking and getting wild late night, then get a Creekside room.

This is it...August 13-14-15-16 of 2014 for a Kicking Great & Unfogettable Drift-In.

Since we're going to be in Maggie Valley, who wants to go to Wheels Through Time (http://www.wheelsthroughtime.com/tm/) and see their HUGE collection of vintage bikes??

The website seems a bit wonky, but there are GOBS of vids on Youtube of the museum, as well as from his current  show "What's in the Barn?".

DC I told the very polite person (female) that I was not picky about the room as long as the A/C worked and it was cold at night, had a working fridge, an a TV, because I can sleep most anyplace once I am tired. Told her just to put me someplace and I would be most happy.

Okay.  I'm thinking of getting a parking lot side room.  I might bring a video camera and have it trained on the parking lot all night.

I have to wait to get through some bills (a refi), then I can make my reservation, but I AM making it to the 2014 Drift-In.  Not willing to let work get in the way this time around.

We will just have D1 doing sentry duty all night for us.

Didn't know he signed up for it.

Besides, I'm a light sleeper.  So I thought I'd pick the quiet side, if there is such a thing there.

I know I didn't really know what to expect when I went this year, and I also know that you guys don't either. The location is in a mountain riding area, only about 70 miles from the Dragon. WolfChief is the host, and he promised it would be "KICK-ASS", so I have a pretty good idea what he meant, after attending this year. These people are not like the typical "bikers" you find at the harley-centric gatherings or even Sturgis...They are all about the ride. We left at 08:00 and didn't get back 'till around 16:00 each day...Meals were all planned and brilliantly executed....so if you want to ride after you ride there, and eat.... ;D, then this group is just what you need. I had a blast. The last time I had this much fun at a "rally" was in Wyoming, in 1988...I rode 500 miles with the group, over 3 days...so I would suspect this is a pretty good indicator of what to expect....

+1 on Troll's observations.  Didn't know a soul (other than from posts on this forum) and I was taken in from the moment my kickstand touched the parking lot.  Good folks that you'll be glad to ride with.  If you're on the fence because you don't know anybody...just go.

I'm going to have a shortened stay at the DI next year (probably Fri & Sat only thanks to the career), but I will start counting down the days (probably in January).  Wouldn't miss it.

looks like I will be making the ride to drift-in 2014, If my wife don't make the trip. Then I'll ride the whole 2600 miles from Salem Oregon. I have family in Charlotte, NC that I want to see also. If the wife goes then I'll have to trailer the bike behind the motorhome. Will be bidding for shift and vacation for next year in two weeks.

Ride with Pride

I'm curious, but at the risk of sounding sacrilegious, is anyone trailering their bike down?  I'm not sure my back can take the ride all the way down and back.  I'd rather arrive with a usable back and butt for riding at the meet, than end up crippled over in pain for most of the time there.
Title: Re: 2014 Drift-In
Post by: Troll on December 19, 2013, 09:16:46 AM
The one I went to was about 50% trailer. I'm riding, but then I always ride to things. I think the percentage of people riding is higher than that of Sturgis, so that shows you another difference in rider type!

I'd say, man it doesn't matter to me.  Shouldnt' be a big deal to anybody else, either- like you said better to trailer it and be able to ride, than to ride the whole trip there and be laid up in bed the whole time.  Ratman might give you grief, but he's gonna give you grief anyway about something....   :o

Maggie Valley,  was banning all rallies , etc. due to a lot of citizens and businesses complaining about motorcycle groups there.  Has that changed ? ?

Another 'heads up'.......  we were at a motel that had no smoking, and "never" smoked in the room.  However,  was around the fire pit, which left a smoky smell on some clothes which I  put into a plastic bag when I changed.   However,   they "smelled" what I can only assume was the smoky clothes from being around the fire,  and claimed I had been smoking in the room (never did )  and wanted me to pay a 'fee'.  So,  a caution for anyone around the fire pits.....  you could get 'accused', and how do you prove your innocence ? .

And that was back when you could have as many wives as you wanted and no one batted an eye.  I don't care if people don't like it.  That's just how I live.  A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

Well, I finally took the plunge and made my room reservations for Maggie Valley.  So I'm definitely planning to go, God willing.

I have one question, though  - can anybody tell me what I would miss if I wasn't able to go down early enough to be there for the Wed. 8/13 day?   I know there probably isn't a definite schedule yet, but I figured there will probably be a ride scheduled for that day??  Anybody have any rough schedule together yet??

Come on warm weather....   ;D

Wow, I haven't been on here in a while...

Trailering:  We trailered last year - not my preferred method of travel, but the old man has a rotten back and as mentioned above, better to arrive ready to rock n roll than all crippled up in pain for the week.  Anybody with an issue - well it's their issue!  I personally would ride it if somebody wants to come trailer with the hubby  ;D  And as for Sturgis - I was out there in 12 - actually I rode thru to Bozeman MT and back - thoses posers do NOT ride in! Oh yeah, some do - but 90% of the bikes I saw were heading in on trailers!  In their defense however, if I were to ride it again (from NE Indiana) - I would trailer to the SD/IA border - nothing to see in Indiana, Iowa or Illinois except Corn and pigs - and you can't carry in IL!

Last year there was a ride on Wed. at Drift In, we missed it as we assumed that was check in day only and arrived late in the day.  Whenever you get there will work out just fine - many were there for the whole time, some were way early and several made it only for the weekend - I'm sure Chief is doing a great job planning and their will be plenty to do no matter when you arrive!
Last year's format was to ride during the day and chill at night.

We are looking forward to 2014 Drift In!

I made the same assumption about Wed. as you did, and missed the ride, but stayed for the thunderstorm! Won't make that mistake again..This was the most fun I EVER had riding with a group. I always hated group rides, but this is VERY different from the usual, how do I put this...H-D type ride!

Sigh.... I am soooo over winter... All this snow/ice/cold weather is for the people who live up north.... there is a reason that I live in the South for and well this is not it...LOL... I heard my poor bike  :'( crying the other night.... I do believe that it is feeling neglected...lol..

But I will ride next Saturday no matter the weather I have a benefit ride to do for a young boy who has stage IV non-hodgins lymphoma... :(

We will be getting to Maggie Valley that Tuesday... So we can get a little rest from the ride there before we start the group rides.. and I agree with Troll I had fun and meet many new people.. Cant wait too do it again!!

Looks to me like the main Drift-In website is:

They have a registration page on there.   Guess I'd better register...

Hey, there Mr. Barn....I've been working on a route that takes me a 100 miles out of my way so I can stop in at your place, and we can go together....Still in the rough planning stages, but we might be able to collect a couple of others as we go....

I'd be quite honored if you would do that, Troll.  I believe Ratman is already possibly swinging by here as well, as I'm almost directly on his way down.  What day to you plan to make the trip?

That would be really cool is we could also meet up someplace on the way with the folks from over East yonder, and all ride down together.

I'm thinking Monday afternoon, so we could finish the (one day) ride to Maggie Valley from your place. I don't want to miss the "opening ceremonies" Here's a copy of the plan, as it is right now....

I sure appreciate all the time you're putting in the route/schedule.  Saves me the trouble....   I was hoping to minimize the interstates and make use of as many lesser roads as possible, but I realize that's really hard to do that when going that far.

What are the chances of veering the route slightly to the East to meet up  with the NY contingent?

I have reserved a second floor parking lot side room. It has 2 beds, and since I usually use just one at a time...I was thinking that splitting the cost 50/50 would benefit both of us. I'm expecting Greenbarn to be riding in on Tuesday with me from his house, but if he can't make it, I'm open to suggestions...I reserved the room starting Tuesday night, so the whole price for the room for 5 nights is $267.50.....lemme know what you think....

I just learned that there has been some sort of a recent mix-up when making reservations at the Dog Pound.   There are 8 rooms left.   Drift-In 14 dates are Aug. 13-14-15-16.   There are rooms available before and after those dates.   Seems like someone at the front desk taking reservations got confused about the dates.   The Owner notified me of this and says its all good now.  There are 8 rooms left.   If you are one of those last minute people.....please make reservations ASAP.

Getting the T-shirts is a gonna cost me a huge amount of $$$ upfront.   So I am going to put in an order the First part of July while I can afford it.
This means you all have til Monday June 30 to reserve yourself a Custom made Rally T-shirt.
I will try to order a few extras depending on the money, but don't count on it.
So if you haven't already registered, do so now.
If you don't want to register but have reservations to make it to Drift-In this year or have every intention on being there or if you just want a T-shirt, then please E-mail me Personally at  wolfchief@charter.net
I will need your FULL NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER AND E-MAIL ADDRESS along with your SHIRT SIZE & QUANTITY.

I would like to check on and/or verify my registration if possible - how would I do that?  I remember registering, but it's been several months, and just wanted to be reminded what I specified in T shirts, etc.

Also, I don't remember seeing anywhere what the fee is for the Drift-in?  I'm guessing there is a fee to cover the T-shirt, misc expenses, etc. etc.??   I couldn't find that info on the Drift-In pages?

Thanks, and looking forward to it.  64 days to go... I REALLY need to get the 1500 mods started...

O.K. Boys....I'm in. Got the kitchen pass, made a reservation, but only thru Thursday night, checking out Friday...that's what was left. Probably the room over the boiler next to the creek and the ice machine....but I took it. I'll play it by ear once I get there.

Ratman - make me a nametag...will send you $1 for the beer fund, if that's all you need.

Drift1 - I'm coming from Maryland and haven't set the route yet. My estimate is 9 to 10 hours, so planning on doing that on Tuesday 8/12. Do you know where you will be on Tuesday...I could try to hook up with you along the road.

Did put a new front tire on....decided to wait on checking the valves but wouldn't let the dealer do it after he gave me the price...so should make it.

Look forward to meeting this crew. So look for black on black with the rattle canned RH.

Just giving this a little (maybe too much) thought..BUT, Ratman, be sure to note down the mileage on your odometer when you leave home, and when you arrive. Since yours is going to be metric, we will have to multiply it by .625 to get a real number. Last year there was a prize on Saturday night for the longest distance RIDDEN to the rally. I missed by 15 miles....
My calculations indicate your trip should be 1018 miles, mine, 1167...maybe I'll win this year. Greenbarn won't even be in the running, with less than 500...

Drift1 - Originally missed, but just read your previous post that indicates you were leaving 8/11 to arrive on 8/13. I took the advice of the forum to not miss the first day on 8/13. So let's keep in touch on travel details whether it works or not.
Troll - My W is a bone stock 2001, except for having tampered with the tamperproof carbs to stop the popping on decal. I waited to find the right one and it is clean. I just found the small flat factory luggage rack and need install it. So stock and not spectacular...but will bring photos and would like to see yours and talk "W."

Troll - it looks well used and rigged for the road....seems a little small for all that gear...the big fairing and the sissy bar. Can't say I like the way engine guards look on the W either....but when I had my T140E, I rigged it with a sissy bar for long trips....I guess you work with what you have. Drifter is much more comfortable on the highway.
Won't hijack the thread with more W photos, but will bring some with me. Looking forward to it.

Well, the aluminum was pitted, the paint was nasty,, the chrome was filthy, rust under the fender, the cases were dirty....looked like it hadn't been washed in months, or years....I dunno, I couldn't stand to ride something like that unless it was fresh from a big road trip. I'm going to fill up at about 180-190 miles, (300 Km) average, so the entire trip, not counting what riding we do in the mountains, will run me about $171 for fuel @ $3.70 a gallon (46 gallons). Last year's trip actually averaged a little over 48 for the 2,500 miles ( I got 52 on the Dragon trip) of Drift-In, so I'm thinking I'll be a little conservative with the estimate, and then be happily surprised, again! Just in case you're wondering, when I put the Michelin's on, I bit the bullet and bought a speedo healer so I could fine tune the accuracy of the instrument. I decided I could live with the speed being off by 2.25 mph, as long as the odometer was correct. A lot easier to ride 72 mph than give yourself a headache trying to figure out some arcane conversion formula for mileage in your head!

Not long to go... I REALLY need to get the 1500 mods started...

Here's a quote from Nick: Getting the T-shirts is a gonna cost me a huge amount of $$$ upfront.

Your Rally Host Chief

I just had an epiphany. Several of us (you know who you are) are going to be riding fairly long distances to get to Drift-In, and for some (you still know who you are) this might be their first really long motorcycle adventure. I've been doing LD riding almost forever, but many have not considered it before. I exchanged address and tel# with Greenbarn, via P.M. since I'm going to his house first, and they we will be riding down, together. Maybe it might not be such a bad idea if we were to all exchange phone #s with each other, just in case something were to happen. Clearly, it would not be for immediate assistance, but a phone tree type set up might be useful...Can't hurt if we know where each of us is...

We do the same thing in my truck club when we are doing a group ride.  The ride leader/organizer is in charge of the list to make sure only club members have access to it.

Received some , not so great news , today from Ventoracing . Seems he isn't going to be able to make Maggie after all this year , bummer  ??? So if there's any drifters out there that would like to link up for the ride down I'd be interested . If not that's fine as well , but as it stands right now looks like I'm riding down by my lonesome .

I actually thought about that.... I think it's "me", though.   You wouldn't say "ride down with I", you'd say "ride down with me".  So, the way I learnt it, it's "ride down with johnny and me".

Can we count my side trips to NYC an DC in total mileage? That way I can beat Ratman. Also, you interested in travelling back together Ratty?

I was thinking that regional people should have each others numbers, and to a lesser degree, the whole group. I'm open to suggestions about how this should be structured. Ratman would be, for example, in the group of East Coast/New York people since he will be closer to them than to say, someone from Texas....Thee is a message board on the Drift-In site, but I think that having direct contact with each other might be a more efficient method...We still have a few days to think this over.

Ok...Super late to the game here!  Is there, by any slim chance, a room still at the Inn?  I've been trying to plan for Drift-in but life seems to redirect me whenever I get close.  If the rooms are all booked is there another establishment in the area that I could contact for lodging?  I am planning to ride in from Louisville, KY if I can find a place to stay, would'nt mind tagging along with a group of riders if schedule allows.

Thanks,

Rizzo

Another word of advice for those who registered on the Drift-in site:   I thought I had registered there late last fall, like maybe November.  However, I got in touch with chief to confirm, and found out I was not registered.  SO, you might want to double-check, and make sure that your T-shirt is on order.

Sooooo, I'm getting things sorted for the trip, and I'm thinking about what kind of tools, if any, and spares to bring. I don't have the factory tool kit, and the one for the W doesn't have enough of the correct sizes to be of any use. I've decided to bring a test light, electrical tape screwdriver set, a long 5mm Allen wrench, so I can pop off my windshield, and, and a few sockets in appropriate sizes, tire pressure gauge, tread depth gauge, inspection mirror so I can check the oil (don't need to bring extra oil, it's not my Harley)...wait, how old are the bulbs???? As far as I know, the bulbs, except for the license lamp are all original...I have some left over stuff from all my H-Ds...no way I could have ridden one of those without replacing the headlight at least once...so 1 spare 2057 for the tail light, 1 194 for the license lamp, and one spare H-4 55/60 for the headlight...I'm not going to bother with the turn signal bulbs, since you can always hand signal....What are you guys bringing???

We have had a "Canadian summer" this year. only one day above 90, and it went down into the high 40's last night... :-\

And I guess we got your American summer - 90+ almost every day since July 1 - a couple in 80's and a couple 100+. Hot and humid, strange weather for us. Usually get two 3 day spells of 90+ and that is it for heat. Today it is beautiful at 73, FINALLY!

I'm still a go, but have decided to let the rain clear out, so the Lodge keeps my Tuesday night and will be leaving Wed at zero-dark thirty....with clear weather. After two days of cleaning, thought I might avoid the rain. Should be at the creek Wed - pm.

There were originally no rides scheduled for today,  so I had planned to go and ride the Dragon again. I put out an open invitation, and there were seven of us!   Beautiful ride to Deals Gap, and the traffic was pretty light, so we had a really enjoyable ride in both directions!  We had home made sausage and chicken Jambalaya for dinner

Left at 0430 this morning from Maggie Valley and got in about 3:15 pm. Wheeled my 800 out to curb to not wake you guys up. Had to get ot of the Smokies and beat the Sunday traffic back to DC and Baltimore. All good with no breakdowns or hiccups. The 800 just did a steady 70-75 MPH per speedo and had no issues. Can't ask for more. Only thing that was consistent was that after 500 miles of highway, I could hear the chain. Happened when I arrived at Maggie Valley when I finally slowed down (so lubed it then) and is evident now that I am home again. Anecdotally (because we are without tach....no issues with the stock gearing....lost a few MPG when doing over 70, but engine never sounded or felt overworked...just roared out of the roadhouse).

It was a pleasure to spend some time with Pilgrim, GB and Troll. Some interesting dynamics at the Drift-in between founders, company sponsors and hosts. As someone said to me: "People are who they are!" I agree. All in all had a great time. Enjoyed the bikes, the rides, the museum (wheels thru time) and the people. Again, Drift1 and Ratman....you were missed. It was a treat to see "Olive" close up. Some photos including a line up on the Blue Ridge Parkway (you will recognize Troll's 1500); some shots in the museum to understand why you could spend a long time there; a stop outside Juke Box Junction and the 800s during judging (the 2005 to the left of my black 2003 got best 800).

Hope GB and Troll make it home safely. Thanks all. Glad I made it. Have to get back to a regular diet after all that home style southern cooking!

Enjoying the picks, guys and gals!  Post more!  And so glad to hear of each rider getting home safely, the last few should be checking in soon...

Time and family considerations didn't allow us to make it this year, but we'll try our best for next year's Drift-In.  The good news on our home front is that I (the Bride) was finally able (after 10 months of mods, including different boots lol) to get out and ride my 800, Princess...so 2beers on Blue and I on Princess celebrated Drift-In 2014 with two days of short, but successful, rides  8)

Safe Travels to all!!!

Greenbarn and I left at about 06:30 this morning. We had rain and nasty cool weather. I called him from a McDonalds in Indiana, he made it home about 17:00. Here's a few shots I took this morning while everyone was getting going.   It was about 60 and pretty foggy, and so was the weather!   Last picture is a shot of my odometer at about noon today. 2,000 miles since Monday morning, and I put on another 220 since I took the picture. 500 left for tomorrow.

Yep, I made it home about 17:15 EST, after leaving at 07:30 EST (the 06:30 was Troll's CST).  About 480 miles today.  After the rain through Lexington, it cleared up about halfway to Cincinnati, and it was dry (but overcast) the rest of the trip.  Glad to be home.  Hope everyone else makes it with no issues.

I haven't downloaded and sorted all my pics yet,  but here's an obligatory "FENDERS" shot....

DC - Recognized your bike once home and on-line again. I make it a habit not to be connected during my free time adventures. I thought GB mentioned looking for you when we first got there....so same for me....sorry for not connecting, but agree with all your comments. Nice after hours shots....like the parked bikes in a row.
GB - Your obligatory fender shot....nice!
Troll - Found the rubber passenger foot peg "caps" for the 800 on-line and have already ordered same from www.kawasakipartshouse.com under "frame fittings." Just finding out about that missing part on my machine was worth the price of admission to the Drift-In.
Glad everyone made it home safe....ride on.

Marc, like we discussed, another option for those covers is a lug nut cover for semi wheels - that is IF you want something more "blingy" than the black rubber.  There are lots of variations - either the plain-jane-ordinary type or there are several options available.  Google "semi chrome lug  covers" or something, and you can see quite a few.  If I remember, the measurements on the bike are about 1 1/4", but that needs verified.

Same here.  I wasn't connected.  Didn't really have any time to check message boards or emails.  The wife I took with me wanted to keep checking out stores most of the time in the surrounding towns.

When we were at the Wheels through time museum, I was trying to describe one of the few types of motorcycles that weren't there. These are called either tricars or foretrucks. I have a picture of the last Harley foretruck built, which is now residing at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Ia., as well as a Wells Fargo tricar which is also there...so now you know what I was talking about....
