.....Easiest way to spot an 800 is to look at the speedo. If you can see the odometer numbers, then it's an 800. If you have to turn on the ignition to see them, it's a 1500.

Much easier way to tell without having to get a key.

The condition is the #1 factor for determining the value.  Given the miles being super low- IF the condition is also that good (i.e. "like new"), then I'd say $4500 is way at the upper end for a 800.  If it has "problems" of any kind, it should be a lot less.  Like it's been said, brakes are easy to work on , but if it's been abused and either one of the master cylinders is bad (unlikely but possible) then you'll have some money in repairing it. If they just need the fluid changed and the brakes bled, then you'll only have a bit of time in it.

$4500 seems a little high for a 2001, even with no miles on it...The brakes are really easy to work on.   Well depends on where you are and what they are worth in your area. Does it have a pair of visible shocks in the back or does it look like a hardtail frame, hidden mono shock, I own an 800 and the brakes are fairly simple and not that expensive to replace and or repair.

Ok so I saw a 2001 drifter at a used car lot. They don't know Motorcycles. It has 2999 miles. And has "no brakes" They  can't tell me if it 1500 or 800 cc. Should I walk away or is it worth the $4500 they are asking plus the cost of a brake job?
