Glad to hear the results are great.
I will replace mine this winter, just because...

Yeah the new spring and holders make a lot of difference. I replaced only the friction plates when I did mine.

I ended up finding a store close by that had the steel plates I needed and replaced all the steel/friction plates as well as the spring, holders & 3 limiters.

I did measure both before and after and they were very close in overall stack height.  Still, the difference is night and day.  The clutch is 100% better.  Maybe it was just that old spring.

Thanks for all the help,
Chuckc

I got the whole thing apart using the "easy clutch spring replacement" instructions.  All the steel plates measured right at 2mm.  All the friction plates were in spec and most were around 3.4mm.  Some of the steel plates had some scoring, see image below.

So, not sure why my clutch was slipping.  Maybe it was the spring.  My plan now is just to put the whole thing back together with the new friction plates + new spring / two part holder.

Steel plates do have some scoring, should they be replaced?

Thanks Guys.

I'm taking Chief's advise.  I've got the two part holder and new spring plus 8 frictions plates.  I went ahead and got the 3 spring limiters too.  I'll inspect the steel plates and I'm thinking they should be OK.

I'll measure the whole assembly but that part of the service manual (Spring plate gap measurement) is a bit confusing with the chewing gum strips and wood.  I may have to read it a few times to figure it out.

I suggest you Don't use the 2006 Mean Streak spring... use the current 1500/1600 pieces, part numbers provided in the mod.  The MS spring is thicker which was a plus with only one holder, but Kaw corrected the problem with stronger springs and double holders. Of course, it's up to you.

Look at a diagram of ANY later model 1500/1600 Vulcan to see how the holders work. I'll add a diagram to the mod instructions when I get the chance.  I used these on my 2002 about 5-6 years ago - works fine.

Look here, old part is 13091, you now have 13280A & B, along with common 92144A

The long way is too Google search "ronayers" then specify 2006 Mean streak from the selection, then select clutch diagram

Is there a diagram anywhere that shows how the two holder is installed?

If you want to do a complete clutch replacement ... do what the dealer said.

But, you should measure the plate package and determine if they need to be replaced. On my 2002 1500, I replaced the friction plates at the same time I replaced the clutch spring... I did NOT replace the other springs or the steel plates. Measure them to see if they need to be replaced.
AND... use the part numbers provided in the below mod. This replaces the weaker original spring and singler holder to a stronger spring and double holders.

I've replaced the diaphram plate twice. The second time I did the Mean Streak mod (at about 126,000 K/ 80,000 miles). I relaced the 10 springs, but only because I'd already bought them from the States.  I measured no difference between old and new. Plates etc remain unchanged.

Hello,

I have an 02 Drifter 1500 and the clutch is beginning to slip.  I've read the following post (and the linked articles) and the OP had a question about the 10 92145-1243 springs that was never answered.  I have the same question and the local dealer said I should replace these 10 springs along with the plates and other springs, holders etc.

#this was the original post that asked about the 92145-1243 springs:

Should I replace those 10 springs while I'm in there?

Thanks
