Blocking the reed valves (by marbling or block off plates) will solve the problem.  Here's some info:

Have. Question close to yours. I recently bought a 2003 drifter 800. We changed the oil and plugs. Now I drove it down the road it is missing and popping and cracking doesn't accelerate going up hills. We pulled the plugs out and they were sutt black so that means it's running rich.  The air filter we did not change yet. Do u think if we change the air filter it will change it and make it better?

Thanks alll. Got it quieted down.  The rear pipe was loose at the head. Simple fix. Thanks again.

Check the exhaust gaskets for leakage. If none, the pipe change and minor mods to the air intake may necessitate the addition of a FI box. I had to add a Cobra FI box when I installed my Big Willys.

Riding a '99 1500 with a Roadhouse two in one exhaust. This is the second year with the Roadhouse setup. Prior to that the PO fabbed a Dutch bypass and gutted the stock pipe and in both cases everything ran fine. This year I notice a lot of popping and backfiring on deceleration. When I changed the plugs I noticed they had a lot of carbon indicating the bike was running rich. I'm not timid when I ride.  I put on a lot of back road miles so there should not be that much carbon build up. I replaced the air filter toward the end of last season which has wondering if that might be one issue. (I plan to remove the filter and run around the block to see if that's it) If it is not the filter anyone have any other thoughts/  Hotter plugs? Repacking the exhaust? Commander?  I am thinking it should not run that different year to year.
