Engine surge

I have a strange fault on my 1500 drifter and just wondered if anyone else had experienced it. The fault is under hard acceleration and only in second gear the engine suddenly surges starts pulling then surges again, it is quite unnerving especially if you have a pillion. During normal riding it behaves as it should,just under fairly hard acceleration. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
