If I had a trailer or sidecar I would just put an ordinary plastic gallon fuel can in the back or side filled with ordinary fuel, I would use that every time I stopped for fuel and top it up with new fuel, the way I ride it would get changed every time I ride, so no worries about stale fuel and no $80 per gallon.

John.

The gas in the 1/2 gallon container is fresh to 2019.  Put it in the trailer and forget about it.  No fuss.

I carry a gas bottle, made for fuel.  I don't believe in saddlebags, lol, so I just have it strapped to my trunk bag.
don't know if its the safest place for it not, but honestly, I just figure its not the most critical thing for me to worry about.
If I never strayed to far from home, I wouldn't bother with it.  and its not been that often that I've even bothered to fill it.

has it ever saved my butt?  no, but it saved one of my buddies butts once, lol!  Him and his wife where VERY glad I had it.

here is a couple pics.  I got the bottle and case new off ebay.

Those floorboards are really nice for the passenger comfort and well worth the funds you have to pay for them. They also look really good on there.

I haven't used a snow blower since I moved from South Dakota 27 years ago.  :)  I learned how to pick my battles.  I don't have to shovel the rain.... and just when I get sick of it, I head to Arizona for a few weeks of Mariner spring training baseball.... and when I come home, it is riding season.  This year, I am taking the Drifter with me... as I now have a two up seat and my passenger floorboards.

There are probably 20 of them within a 10 block area of where I live. They work very well in a "city" setting. I had a big one when I lived in the country, but I don't need anything that big anymore. I also have some step grandchildren and a son in law with a plow on his 4 wheeler thing...

:o    2 stroke snow blower   wow have not seen one of them in a long time. 2 gallons of fuel all winter, you must shovel a lot more then I do. I used to take all the left over fuel from my boat (40 to one mix) and put it into the truck rather then store it all winter, and do the same with the fuel from the bike at the on set of winter. Never had an issue so far.

I have a nice little 2 stroke snow blower...good on fuel, but I still manage to go through 2 gallons of pre-mix every winter....what ever is left, usually not much, I dump in either the car or a bike...won't hurt anything.

I have used this manufactured gas in my blower and string trimmer for the last few years.  Not this brand, but similar, as I buy the "pre-mixed" blend.  I use so little of this stuff, that I like the fact that this stuff is stabilized for a long time.  No worries about it gumming up my carbs.

I probably should see how my bike runs on this stuff, but I know that it should get me to the next refill station.... that is all that I am worried about.  They way it works out.... someone else might be trying this stuff in their motorcycle before I do..... as running out of gas is something that happens out there to people who don't plan very well.  :)

greenbarn

That sounds like a good idea....  that is, dumping the fake stuff with the remaining gallon in reserve, so that it has a better chance to burn.   As long as it DOES burn....     I added about a gallon of "gas" from my gas can at home once to the 800, thinking I needed a little to make sure I got into town.   Had a terrible time with it running - died at stops, barely ran, had to leave the choke on......   Found out someone (could have been me) put diesel in my gas can....     Had to drain the tank... :(

Larry, have you ever tried the Magic Tank stuff before?   There is something about "non-flammable" based gas substitute that casts a doubt to how well it works.  The Amazon reviews are kind of mixed, too.   Makes you wonder if you should purposefully let the bike run out of gas (like in the drive way) and see if it will start up on this stuff.   But that makes for an expensive experiment, as well - $40 shipped - WOW, that's $80 per gallon...

No, to be honest about it.... I bought a half gallon and put it in my trailer.  I usually travel with a GPS and use the reserve as a notice of fuel shortage.  If I was ever in the situation where I hit reserve, I would check my GPS and decide if I was going to need additional mileage and if so, I would immediately add the 1 quart container of the regular gas.... and if the mileage looked bleak, I would add the 1/2 gallon of manufactured fuel.  I don't think I would trust trying to start and run on this stuff alone.  A mixture of regular gas and this stuff would be my answer.

If I came along a biker on the side of the road and out of gas...... I would offer the 1/2 gallon of the fuel at my purchase cost.  If they didn't want to buy it, no worries.  I would just move on.  I have given away my quart bottle of gas in that situation which allowed them enough to get to the next town.  10 miles is good.... lol

This is exactly why I fiddled with the computer settings via the sensor inputs...now I'm averaging 45 mpg....and as high as 52 at times.

I have similar issues with the Drifter as far as fuel capacity goes.  I tote  a trailer, so it does cut into the distance between fillings.  To compensate for it, I carry 2 quart fuel containers filled with high octane gas as well as a 1/2 gallon (always in the trailer) of stabilized non petro based fuel.... see picture and link.  I target 100 mile fill ups, but I really miss my 225 mile per fill up range on my Goldwing.

......2 liter soad bottle and we are ok....

Or, just fill your tires up with fuel.  All that air is just wasted space, and the extra rolling weight should help the gas mileage.....   :o

I looked at that one place in the US that did that work or mod, they are not doing it anymore, and they wanted you to ship your tank to them, so you would be tankless for about 4 months they claim, then it was $2000.00 for the work, and that did not include the repainting of the tank. Think it was 2 more gals they would have added to the tank so in my mind really not worth it.......2 liter soad bottle and we are ok....

If you want to spend money there are people out there who can cut your tank in half and fit a four inch strip down the centre.. It will cost a fortune, carrying more fuel will increase the weight, and slightly reduce the mileage and I still think you would be better off just filling up at 60 miles or carry a gallon can in the sidecar.

John.

greenbarn

Who needs a pump?  Can't she just hold onto the jerry can and funnel, and then just pour it into the bike when it runs low??

No Worries

CDNRatMan

:o you can do what GB would do .......put the missus into the sidecar and have her use a hand pump and pump the fuel over to the main tank.....lol.....

yes GB and say you did not think of that idea yet.......

You could do what I do, Just fill up at sixty miles and don't worry about trying to squeeze the last drop out.

John.

greenbarn

Alternatively to using a fuel pump compatible with the bikes FI, you could just use a transfer fuel pump to transfer the fuel to the main tank.   Probably require having an additional line to the bike's tank, and maybe a valve....

Sounds about right for a hack rig....Depending on the way the hack is designed, you might be able to put an aux. fuel cell behind the seat, but remember, you need to have a way to transfer the fuel. The injection system makes this a problem, unless you have a fuel cell with a compatible fuel pump in it.  Sounds like an interesting engineering problem.

Hello All, I have a great 1999 Drifter just recently bought. Its got a Champion Hack on it. I love the setup ! But I get less the 25 mpg. I need more storage . One person suggested a reserve tank between the hack and me, not bad. Do other have any suggestions??  I am all ears. I get about 100 mile to a tank, now.

Thx  Jim  Mac
