Fuel Bottle?

ok good idea with those and I do have a set of bags for long trips and could find a place for on of them to go someplace safe on the bike, 1/4 of a gal would get you far enough to really make you mad or to a gas station.

You don't need to worry about venting, just don't over fill them - there's usually a line marked on the outside that indicates the max fill.

I actually use a fuel bottle (I just got a second one also). These are what I have in the 30 oz. size. It comes out to about 1/4 gallon per bottle.

I don't really have actual mounts for them because I just throw them into the saddlebags. I've never had them leak yet but I also only carry them on trips or when I'm going for a long ride (I got lost once to the point I needed the GPS I brought and was on reserve when I got to the gas station so now I carry them lol). I have a smaller one that I use for my backpacking stove and I've never had issues with it leaking, and it not having a vent has never been an issue either and it stays in my garage year round. With temperature swings from summer to winter of over 100° F, I'd say that speaks well for the construction.

If you do decide to mount it to the frame somewhere, I would go with something like this (I have no idea if this actually fits the bottles or not) that covers the whole thing. It would be slightly unnerving hearing rocks or other road debris pinging off of the bottle as I was riding knowing it was filled with gas.

If you don't care about it being covered, and want it mounted, I would mount a plate to the frame and use a few hose clamps to attach the bottle to the plate. That would make it much cheaper.

We don't put them in a freezer, and it will never get that cold during any riding season down this direction!!!

If you had a gas can vented on the bike, especially in the saddlebag, I think it would make a mess or at the least everything in the bag would smell of gas.

AND with out a vent, they shrink down and collapse when it gets cold out, unless they are full.

Buy a couple of aluminum water bottles and brackets like cyclists us on their bikes. A couple of hose clamps to hold them to the crash bars and away you go....

Actually, I think you need one that "doesn't" vent, don't you? All of the gas cans sold around here, for the past several years, are required by CARB and EPA regulations, to be sealed (non venting). Makes 'em swell up like a balloon in the sun.

Oh here we go. I have been looking at this because up here we have some long stretches between fuel points. when I first bought the bike and went on a ride to my sister's, and not sure of how far I could get. I did the poor man thing and filled a 2 liter soda bottle with gas. Not the safest thing to do.
Those aluminum bottles for white gas they do not vent, or most do not. If you are going to carry gas it needs to be in a container that vents.

Anybody use a "spare" fuel bottle. I know I've seen some posts on this subject here. I'm considering adding a quart or so or maybe even a whole litre (for you metric folks). SO looking for the best suggestions for a setup - Safe and Cheap.

I know they make aluminum bottles for camping to store camp stove fuel (basically gasoline) that would work (30 oz, or I've seen a 1.5L version) - and I could use a fire extinguisher bracket made to mount to a buggy roll bar - to mount said bottle to the frame somewhere..... But looks like I'd have $40 or somewhere in the neighborhood.

Looking to pick some brains for other better-cheaper ideas... Of course safety is the #1 criteria in the end.

Ideas?
