You can visit most of the distilleries on organised tours and drink as much as you like.. The cost of a bottle of single malt whisky is about $1 before it leaves the distillery the moment it goes out the door it gets taxed to the hilt.

Back in the old days before all the drink driving laws, beer was sold so quickly that it was usually delivered every day, this meant that it was sold at whatever temperature it came off the delivery truck (dray) at, as the brewery was usually at room temperature so was most of the beer.
These days almost all the beer in the British isles is served cold. The bottled beers are sold from refrigerated display cases and if the cabinet has just been restocked you might get a warm one.

When I lived there, the beer was about the same as the outside temp... but that's okay because it was always COLD! except for a month or so in summer- <g>. Honestly, the beer was chilled, not icy cold... I don't expect it has changed much. We'll be staying at a couple of 5-star hotels so...

So not much has changed in pubs since I was there!

I had a Triumph GT6 (auto) and a bike when I lived there. It is a great place to ride... in the summer - between rain storms!

I haven't had a pint in Scotland for years, last three times I was there I was doing long distance riding and you can't afford to drink and drive in Britain these days.. But I'm pretty sure a pint of heavy is still a pint of heavy.. only thing is they probably have about ten different choices from ten different brewers.. Pubs have changed a lot in the last 30 years.. No smoking indoors and be careful, don't flash a wad of cash, and don't pick any fights, and don't get so drunk that you don't know what you are saying.

The Scots are one of the friendliest nations in the world but with high unemployment some of the teenagers are just nuts and stabbings in some areas at night and almost a part of life.

Pity you won't have a bike Scotland has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world..I think the A90, where you will be has more camera's than most other roads.. lots of signs too like, are you tired stop and rest, have you got enough fuel (without telling where the nearest fuel stop is), don't speed, are you wearing your seat belt..

So if I go into a pub nowadays and ask for a pint of "heavy" or a "wee heavy" will they think I've been under a rock for 30 years or will they still give me a good dark high gravity pint?

Try the" One ,o,one" on the High St in Perth. It does a pretty good fish supper. Can thoroughly recommend.

Do not know about Edinburgh or Perth but If you take a wee detour along the Fife coast to the Anstruther Fish bar it was the best in Britain .
In good weather at the weekends be prepared for a long wait to be served as it gets very busy .

Well John and UK folks, we're set to visit Edinburgh and Perth (Gleneagles) the middle of May. This is a working trip, so no side excursions unfortunately. Its been 30+ years since I lived in Scotland so I know everything has changed.

The most pressing question... are fish'n'chips still the same! I truly miss them... lived in Kidlington, England as a kid and the first thing I did when we docked in Dunoon was hit a the fishnchips shop.
I assume the weather is still the same... unpredictable, chilly and always the chance of rain. Any other tidbits would be helpful.
