You have to remember that originally there were games of "football" which allowed both kicking and running with the ball, mob games with no rules, Boston rules, various regional and university rules etc. American football evolved from all of these games, eventually adopting Rugby football type play and adding some purely North American rules, like the line of scrimmage, center to QB, forward pass, etc. Canada had a lot to do with these developments. The oblong ball wasn't used in all the early forms of football. Eventually, all these forms settled into three major branches... N. American FB, Rugby, and Soccer. Personally the history is far more interesting than the play. Too much money involved nowadays... excepting Rugby which is still true to its roots and great to watch.

You are right, though, Ratman. I see your point about the name. It's only actually kicked about 6-10 times per game, isn't it?? I guess it would be more appropriate to call it "pig bladder ball"....

Not a real football fan myself other then CFL and more into Hockey and lacrosse .....

Yes, I realize college football is much a US thing... for some. Like I said, I'm not a sports fan, so I don't really see the big allure of it.

This, on the other hand, was college football how Ratman remembers it....

You are right, though, Ratman. I see your point about the name. It's only actually kicked about 6-10 times per game, isn't it?? I guess it would be more appropriate to call it "pig bladder ball"....

Imagine you are a fruit salesman in New York and you get a phone call from a very rich native of New Guinea, this man has never been out of the jungle and somehow he has got hold of a fruit that tastes like heaven and he is trying to describe it to you so that you can sell some to him..

"What does it look like?" "It is round" "what does it taste like?" "Heaven" "What size is it?" "big enough to pick up in one hand"..By this time you are thinking up to grapefruit size and down to cherry.. so you ask the color, "sort of reddish green" so you drop the citrus fruits, eventually you realise that it is about the size of an apple, so you ask what it feels like, "Smooth to touch" he replies, you are holding a nice smooth rosy apple and tell him that you can send the crate of fruit out to him on the next plane. You hang up the phone felling pleased with yourself about the way you methodically solved this little problem, as the man in the Jungle hangs up his phone he is pleased because he will get his crate of peaches tomorrow..

I would not recognise college football if it came gift wrapped, although I still recognise cheerleaders..

I do have to ask though why it is called football, only one person on the team uses his feet to move the ball forward, everyone else carries it, so perhaps carry ball, handball, ok now to go and rest......

the "smoked duck" referred to the Oregon Ducks, the University of Oregon college football team, which was soundly defeated by The Ohio State University Buckeyes (my alma mater). Bucks were (ranked #4), and beat Alabama (ranked #1) in the semifinals, then whopped the Ducks (ranked #2) 42-20 Monday night in the new College Football National Championship. I'm really not a sports fan, but I did watch the last 2 games.

I don't think the Ducks could handle it either (sorry couldn't resist that one)

@ Ratman:
I was, of course, referring to the team Buckeyes, but them food Buckeyes (candy) aren't too bad either. BTW the chearleaders are easy on the eyes too, now that you mention it.

And on the subject of food and ducks, did you know that Bombay Duck is a fish..

They leave it to dry in the air on a clothesline for about four billion years then they crush it beween their fingers over the top of curry.. I think it tastes disgusting..
