Gutting the Stock Exhaust

I wound up removing the easiest set of baffles and then only drilling out a small part of the second set. The bike is loud enough that I haven't been pulled out in front of and still runs well. It'll definitely hold me over until I can afford to get a real exhaust.

I gutted mine completely and don't regret it, yet anyways, lol!
It obviously made it louder, but not stupid loud.  Its actually pretty quite at normal idle.
it also made my throttle response a little quicker and the bike felt a little quicker in the seat.   its been a couple thousand miles and is doing great.
having said that, I would definetly take some thought before doing it, because to completey gut the exhaust means theres no going back (at least practically, anyway).
after I got the easy stuff out near the end of the exhaust, I used a 2' long 1/4 inch drill bit and drilled holes near the spot welds, then used a super long punch and knocked them out, all from the end of the exhaust.

If a proper re-tune is done, I don't see why it would need back-pressure to run right, but I think there could  be a chance of it running crappy with just removing all back pressure as LarryinSeattle stated.
Mine ran great with no re-jetting, but I bought mine with 38,000 miles on it.  who's to say the carb wasn't messed with before me?

The bike needs back pressure to run right.  Removing the baffles will make it run shitty, use more fuel and have less power.

My opinion:  Just ride it.

My plans for buying a replacement for my stock exhaust system have absolutely gone out the window.

Instead I decided to remove the seat and the rear fender so that I could gut my stock exhaust (to hold me over). The only walkthrough that I could find only showed the removal of the first baffle for the 800. It sounds a little better than it did before, but I'm still not sure if it's at the sound level that I want.

Everything I've seen for the 1500 shows removing both the first and second set of baffles and I was curious if anybody else did the complete work-over on their 800. If so, how did it turn out? Did it make you want to immediately replace the whole thing or was it at least adequate for the short-term?
