Modifying the Drifter Air Filter Covers with Caddman Mod

Will do, the fuel controller just arrived but no parts from Chuckster yet. With the Christmas season here it might take a little longer.

all you need to do to stop the backfire on decel is 1) be sure the pipes aren't leaking, and 2) close off the air intake port to the P.A.I.R. valve. If you still had the original air cleaner installed, there is a big 1/2" hose that runs to the back of the right side airbox. If you plug that off (marbling) the pop will stop. I removed the P.A.I.R. valve and plugged the sensor port completely, and then sealed the 2 big hoses that run to the coasters... This is an emission device similar to what cars had 25 years ago.

I am experiencing a fair bit of back firing on deceleration. I bought my bike with the aftermarket exhaust already installed. The previous owner told me the bike shop who installed the pipes said there was no need for a fuel controller. I don't think opening up the air will help this any. I plan on installing a fuel controller for this reason alone.
I'm sure the neighbours will appreciate it.

I didn't put a fuel processor on mine, and I have a Peace Pipe on, right now. I found no need to disturb the original fuel programming. Bike runs strong, gets good fuel mileage, and has no strange running issues, surges or backfires....The stock exhaust system actually flows more air than the peace pipe. I get about 2 mpg less with the peace pipe, running at 80 mph, than with the stock exhaust. I get the same if I keep the speed to 70...

Just got off the phone with Joe Norris at Chucksters, I ordered the right side conversion kit for $175, it is supposed to come with everything I will need (other than a fuel controller). Again the best part is that I will be able to use the original air breather covers. The kit is 7" and the old filter cover is 9" that will leave a 2" opening right around for air. I could even cut a hole in the backing plate for a little more from the left side filter but it's probably not necessary. Many thanks to everyone for advice and input. I will keep you posted.

You and a few others on this forum design and custom build your own parts - the envy of most of us and I appreciate any input from you for this reason. I have some mechanical ability and given enough time and guidance could replicate your mods. But unfortunately time (my spare time) is at a premium. If I could I would do this entirely myself just for the job satisfaction. I still might. It would take me a couple of weekends to fabricate the parts and install, if I work one overtime shift I could pay for the parts 3X and install with time left over. Sometimes it's about cost effectiveness.

I'm about 99% sure I wrote him and asked about the Drifter and fitment but, if interested, I would write him to be sure.

That in turn would allow you more choice in filter covers. He has a few nice ones.

but I like symmetry so I want both sides to look the same although, maybe a nice long horn on the left side would be ok. I know it's expensive but you get what you pay for. I plan on purchasing before spring.

I bought Chucksters ultimate baffle for my Nomad and the build quality of his work was incredible and of course, I love the sound. He seems like a really cool, stand up guy.

the original air filter, located in the left air box, is so small, it fits inside the filter for an 800. I'm running an 800 K&N in my setup. Lots more air, and now that I have about 60,000 or so miles on it, I guess it works....I'm averaging 45 mpg over that 60,000 miles. I was getting 37-40 ....

Troll, I seen your link about the backing plate. It was smaller than the original - 7" vers 9" . This (and the taller filter) allows more air than the original setup on the left side (no restrictive air pipe).

Excellent article, many thanks. I will re-read this several times. So with the kit you were able to keep the original air filter covers. I would like to keep them. There really isn't anything that I like out there as far as air filter covers are concerned I like the retro look of the originals, had I thought of it at the time when I painted the bike I would have painted the covers pearl white - same as the 2 tone paint. Do your air filter covers stick out farther than original?

The problem is with the air crossover tube between the cylinders. The right side air box is fed from the left side and the crossover is too restrictive to let the engine really breathe. The mod you are talking about won't work with an injected engine, unless you make your own new base for the right side.

I have been thinking of opening up my air intake by doing the Cadman mod. Problem is I can't find a decent air filter cover that I like. Any suggestions other than the Spectre or K & N 9" covers?

What if I do the Cadman mod but instead of going to the 9" filter and cover I just open the sides up on the filter covers and keep the original air filter? Any input? Would be nice not to chop up the original covers but can't find anything I like.
