I have been called a "marshmellow" and confess that I am. I also love animals and think their lives are of great value BUT... I think this woman was correctly found guilty of a criminal act!! When she tested, applied for, and accepted a driver's licence she entered into a social contract to abide by the traffic laws which are designed to make sharing the road with other drivers as safe as possible. She broke that law and directly caused the death of two fellow road users.

As a safety guy I have investigated many, many fleet accidents. Training and common sense makes the difference.  Swerving to avoid an animal  ... when they show up at the door and tell your family you are at the morgue - a live duck or two really seems unimportant.

This woman didn't swerve to avoid hitting an animal... she PARKED in the middle of a road, obviously with limited visibility, to kidnap a bunch of ducks - resulting in two deaths!  I have no sympathy for her.

Always take out the animal....of course, when a moose wanders out in front of you, reaction takes over, but DUCKS??? I'm with Chief on this one; that she be banned from driving in ANY province.

I was also taught if need be take the animal out and avoid the other traffic or making a maneuver that was dangerous.

I learned the lesson to sacrifice the animal over your vehicle safety the hard way.  I was on a country road one day when a german sheppard just walked out in front of my car from nowhere.  I swerved to avoid it, but ended up hitting it anyway.  I lost control and I ended up going off the road and down an embankment, almost rolling over.  Could have killed myself and one of my wives in the process.  Of course the dog didn't make it and it exploded in half on impact.

Totally oblivious and deserves jail time, IMHO.

What sort of idiot would stop and PARK in the middle of a damn road where there was poor visibility. At the very least she should be prohibited from driving forever, after she gets out of jail. I have no sympathy for such stupidity.

When I was teaching my kids to drive I drilled it into their heads that they always had to be aware of what others were "expecting" them to do.
