Beach bars - winter project

Thank you for the offer Dave! No hurry in measuring it out yet. I will search online for Venhill engineering. I am also digging a little deeper locally. I thought I read somewhere that there is a place in MA that does hydraulics for all sizes and fittings. When I find the place I'll order the bars then measure the length I need before ordering any cables of hoses. Plenty of time before we see any riding time here! Thanks again!!!!

Venhill engineering will make one off hoses with removable banjo's in either stainless or good chrome for not much money...try google

Well I'm back. Holidays are just about over and I'm about to start on the bike. Happy New Year to all! Let's hope this year proves to be a great riding year again and everyone stays safe! I was going to order the Flanders Grande Beach Bars but started looking into the cable and hose extensions. Electrical is easy (famous last words) but thank you Mak for the tips. Definitely come in handy especially if I'm going to hide stuff inside the handlebars. I've contacted Motion Pro about the cables, no problem there. I can't find a place to get the hydraulic hoses done. I have 2, brake and clutch. Local machine shop that assembles hydraulic hoses here are not set up to do small fittings, just industrial. Anyone know where I can get hydaulic hoses with bango fittings to length? Also, I was hoping to put all the hoses, cables and wiring inside the bars but I don't think they will all fit without pinching or binding. Anyone have any experience with that? I know I can at least hide the electrical and maybe the throttle cables but not sure about the hydraulic hoses. I guess I'm also concerned about drilling too many (or too large) holes in the bars which may compromise the structural intergrity. Whoa, big 50 cent words there, heh? I almost hurt myself    Anyway, if the hydraulic hoses were to fit, I would think the hoses would have to be threaded in through the bars before the banjo fittings are attached, right? Just trying to think this through before I do something stupid!  Thank you in advance for all your help, guidance and information, greatly appreciated! Anyone with pics would be great! (sound familiar?)

My bikes do get parked in the man cave for the winters  All my comforts are there > Big screen tv for what ever I feel like watching , stereo , fridge hell there's even a bedroom down there for the late nights . Aidan likes to refer to them as guys night  because there's no ladies aloud in the man cave

Yep, it's heated. Plenty of room for comfortable seating (mechanics stool), tools, moving around, etc.  but not quite enough room for a fridge or tv. Had a good laugh at that. If I had those things in there my work would never get done or my bike would be all backwards. I know my wife wouldn't let me put it in the living room. I do have a two tap kegerator in my bar, but that's a story for another day!

of course you have heat in the shed? I would have a beer fridge really close by? Some comfortable seating is also required, and so then a TV is needed. All important things to be handy while tinkering and working on your ride.

Shed for the winter.......never.......

Thanks for all the info! I will let you know as soon as I get started, after the riding season of course. Preparing the shed now for the project. I'm sure I will be back to this string for some more advice as I get along. I will take some pics as well as it goes. I will get with knurls, it is a chrome bar. I'll wait on the extensions until I get the bars and see if I can re-position things first. If I can't I'll be back with some more questions I'm sure. Thanks again!!! I put 39" beach bars (I think they were 39's) many years ago.  Didn't change any cables but I did have to pull the front brake hose out of it's loom and move it in a bit.

One thing to watch for, and this isn't beach bar specific, but when you tighten up the bars, make sure the throttle cable tubes at the bottom of the throttle grip assembly don't contact your tank when you move the wheel fully to the right.

If you want to get the bars a little bit lower, you can swap out the throttle grip for one from a Meanstreak which has the throttle cables coming out of the top rather than the bottom.  Now, I haven't actually done this mod but I'm planning on it (I've only had the M/S throttle for about 8 years now - don't want to rush into anything  ).  I've read that the stock Drifter cables won't work and the M/S cables arn't long enough (particularly if you have wider beach bars) so you might need to do some cable measuring (if you do, let me know).

Nhtrikes is doing the beach bar thing...I have 4.5" pullback H-D risers and 1983 E-Glide stainless bars on mine. Didn't have to extend anything, just a little rerouting.

I don't know the dimensions (pullback, width & rise) top o' my hat, but before you extend the cables try the bars without it.  If no good then extend.  What I have done is I bought some old controls off ebay and so kept wire colours.  The extensions on my scooters are different for each scooter.
The J1 is extended and cables run external - easy peasy  no probs.
The R1 (BigMak) is extended and runs insider the handlebar
The R1 (MakMachine) is extended, runs inside the handlebar and through the triple tree top plate.  It also has a second connection point with electrical cable joiners so that I can take off the triple tree.

Hint 1 - offset the connection points on each cable, other wise you end up with a big bulb where the joins are.  I used 3 different offsets and it works great.  I soldered each wire, then shrink wrapped each wire and then put the hole thing through cable containment.

Hint 2 - make a plan for cutting positions (don't forget it should be diff for each wire), precut the insert wires (of course they shall be all the same size).

Hint 3 - depends of how you go about it - if you get stuff off ebay you only have one joining location - if you insert wires then you have to insertion points - again try to offset them.

Lastly - if you can have a battery and tester ready so that you can check for function the wiring before you install the lot - saves you time if not all is working right away.

Knurled bars...no doubt at all, especially if they are chromed. Without the knurl, they will slip no matter how tight you make the clamps.

Ok, so my winter project is to move my regulator to the front of the engine below the radiator (10 min.) and to put a Flander's Grande Beach Bar (N5) on the bike. Thank you to all who have shared your info regarding beach bars, wouldn't even be attempting this myself without the resources found here. I know I'll have to extend the cables, hoses and electrical. Have Motion Pro in my favorites to call. One more question, should I get the 1" metric with knurls or without? Do our handlebars have knurls or are they plain? Flanders states knurls are 4" inside and 5" outside so I'll measure my clamps tonight to make sure they line up. I just don't want the knurls to show outside the clamps, obvioulsy. Anything else I need to be concerned about??? Thanks!
