Instrument Cluster Problems

It sounds to me like you are missing a connection. The fuel gauge is a separate connection from the cluster, and should have no bearing on what the speedo does...The connections are in front of the tank, next to the fuel pump connections..If it were me, I'd start by disassembling the cluster (it comes apart pretty easily, just a few screws) and GENTLY putting the speedo needle back to 0...check all the connections under the tank front. Here's a pin out of the plug....pretty simple circuits, but if a ground is missing, I can see the needle going off the dial...like when a GM air core gauge has no sensor signal....

Do you have any information regarding the voltage that these outputs should be putting out so I can test that and see if the electrical board is actually receiving signal.

I was not aware of this but I definitely didn't have it upside down too long, but that might be exactly what it is. Cause the plug is in and everything is hooked up but it still doesn't seem to be working. Is it even possible to order another one being that, that is the piece of equipment that holds the mileage of the bike on it?

I do not know how long you had it off, but the manual has a very specific warning that the Speedo must be kept in the upright "normal" operating position at all times or it might malfunction. Hope this is not it as it seems to be the only option then is to replace it. Check the obvious first, leads, contacts, grounds, plugs in properly.

I forgot to say, its a 2002. don't know if that makes a difference.

I just bought a drifter 1500 with 1500 miles on thats been sitting up for 10 years. All in all I got it cleaned up and running good but the ONLY problem I'm having still is when I plugged in my instrument cluster after putting the tank back on it acted crazy and now the speedometer is stuck pointing toward the rear of the bike and the gas gauge is stuck at empty even with a full tank of gas. All the instrument lights seem to be working ok on the cluster. Ohh and the mileage digital gauge is not working. It worked when I took the tank off but now when I plugged it back in it went crazy. Any help on this issue would be  greatly appreciated.
