motorcycle jack for 800?

18" wide should be plenty I made mine 15" wide, then I just had to build the brackets that went under the frame itself. some of this is just do it as you can make it fit and see it.

The dimension I found online was 18", which looking at the picture and the overall dimensions seems correct. I'm can't measure my bike, but I would say with certainty, that my bike is not that wide.

Just see if you can find out how long the lift arms are.......that is the important issue here....

If that harbor freight jack is as good as it sounds, it's probably what I'll go with. Then I just need to modify it to clear all the stuff under the bike. Thanks for all the input.

I just think that for the 800 you will have to mod an adaptor unless you go with a Black widow type of lift.

my mod cost me nothing really scrap metal parts and a welding buddy to do my bidding. Little fiddling and such and it works really good for me. I can lift the bike all the way to the limits of the lift and it is very stable and steady. The Grease nipples and the lower part of the swing arm are the issue with the 800.

You might get it to work out of the box, but it probably won't work well or be easy to use. I have a floor jack similar to Ratman's and I can get the 800 up in the air but it's a lot of work to position the jack so it will hit something solid and I have to move it front or back far enough to clar all the obstructions that it doesn' lift straight. So with your High Lift jack, I predict there is probably some position you can get it into if you work hard enough, to get the bike up, but it will probably work a lot better on the 800 if you fab an adapter gizmo to make it fit better. That's one of my complaints on the 800 design- it seems they could have predicted the owner's wanting to jack up the bike once in a while and made that job a little easier...

I looked, and it was DC that has the lift you spoke of, and he says it works well, but he is lifting a 1500.

ok I can only say that we are looking at two different lifts to start with. Mine did not work at all at first as it came from the box. The arms had to be made longer, and needed the spacers to keep the zerk fittings from being pressed on as you lifter it, also the engine was in the way not the frame.
I have not seen yours other then in a picture, some one here does have said lift but think they have a 1500, Bake or DC if I am right.
You would have to measure the lift arms and see if they will be deep enough to lift the bike on the frame, I'll guess that the lift arms are inside the frame legs and so will they be far enough apart to give the bike stability once it is up? Now if the lift arms are at the same height as the legs it should slid under the bike easy and then you might need to have a couple of blocks welded or bolted to the arms to have the frame rest on the blocks.
Wish I had seen this one might be a cool built to make it work......

gdrudd13, I finished the lift this summer and painted it to make it look nice. Last year I had the bike sitting on it all winter at the first safety stop, not one issue, never moved, never was a problem.

this winter I took both wheels off and it was stable enough to sit on and watch TV. It is a bit of a pain to get under the bike if the floor or driveway is not level, then 2 people is really handy, that being said in the living room it is really easy to line up slide under and get in the correct position. As you can see I have left it like this while both wheels are off and it is very stable.
if you need more pictures let me know.
there is about 3 small mods I am thinking of doing in the spring but they are more for me then any other reason.

gdrudd, I use a m/c jack on my 800, but I don't like it. It's not really stable, so I have to be really careful when it's up in the air. I've often thought about making brackets to put on the jack but never got around to it.

Ratman, however, is your man. He has made said apparatus and claims it works well. I found this thread, but there could be more.

So I tried searching but came up empty so if I missed a thread, point me there and we'll be done. I know that a lot of stuff hangs down below the framerails on the 800s and can make it complicated to use a motorcycle jack. Even with all this, can a standard motorcycle jack be used? Or do I have to make custom rails (I've seen those, and that project doesn't sound appealing)? What do all of you use? Ideally, I'd have a lift table, but those are big and garage space is kind of a premium, so a motorcycle jack it is.

If custom mounts/rails are necessary, has anyone tried to make this lift work? Or does anyone use it?

It seems like it would be much simpler to add custom rails/mounts if needed to make it work, and would still low enough to still fit under the bike with them on.
