9-11 Ride

Got back about an hour ago. BEAUTIFUL day! I did my best to remember everybody while I was there. It's almost impossible not to. They are building a memorial to the Gulf War Vets. The concrete foundation is in. I took a picture. It will be interesting to watch the progress. This month is dedicated  to Korean War Vets..The place was pretty crowded, lots of Bikers coming and going..We sure do seem to be a patriotic bunch...I tried to be a good boy, and ride at or just slightly above the speed limit...all rural Wisconsin roads...mostly ran 60-62 mph. I made the whole trip on 1 tank of fuel...197 miles! The push me light came on at 182.7...Gauge is right on the empty line..I'll fill it up tomorrow. I went over to Arcadia, to the Memorial Park there. I came into the park from a different direction and I found this hillside amphitheater  on what is called General's Lookout. Never saw this before. Check out the 155mm Howitzers!

On that note, (see the red above)quite a few years back, we were at my fathers for the 4th of July. The parade committee asked my father to put a couple of his antique vehicles in the parade, which put us and our children in the parade, driving one of the vehicles. My wife was moved to tears; she could not believe the patriotism shown; there were a couple of the boys from  the valley fresh back from active duty (Operation Desert Storm) and the banners, and show of support etc. for these 2 soldiers was amazing. The entire parade and festivities seemed to have a more personal (don't know if that is quite the right word) feel to everyone there (this was in a small mountain valley community in Montana) as almost everyone there knew the boys, was related to them, or knew/worked with their fathers/brothers/sisters etc. My wife, whose father served in WW2, and was an officer in the Legion, said she had never seen such a show of patriotism and support before; in her words, "Canadians could take a lesson", no disrespect to Canadian soldiers, but the average citizen doesn't seem to be all that patriotic any more. Which is a shame.

Anyway, glad you were able to go, Troll, sounds like it was a good day.

Before he passed away, my father's house was about 10 miles from Vets park in Neilsville. Very nice area to ride.  He wasn't a vet, but please honk a horn in his memory for me.  Enjoy that ride!

  Since the 12th anniversary of 9-11 is on a Wed. this year, I'm going to make my pilgrimage to memorials on Sat. the 6th. Here's the route. Primary is the Highground Vet's memorial Park, Neilsville, and then to the Arcadia memorial park. Should be a nice ride. They are predicting 90 deg. and clear...196.5 miles
