The most easy way is to look at the front fork and rear bumper. If it is black -> J, if it is chrome -> R
The best is to look at the paperwork :)

I have a 1999 J but registered in 2003  so year won't say all ???

Build date/model year determines J or R model.  If your 2001 is truly built as an 01 model year (as opposed to a 99 or 2000 model, first titled in 2001) - then it's an "R". The 10th digit of the VIN contains the model year. x=99, Y=2000, 1=2001 etc.

99-2000 were J, and 01-following were R.  I believe the 7th or 8th digit of the VIN should be either an R or a J as well.

No Worries

I'm assuming the bikes the R version being a 2001 1500, how would i solidify that knowledge?
and i do like the squat look of the baron bars as well.

Have you got the J or R version?

The R version has longer throttle cables than the J.

To help on the J1 you can reroute the throttle cables by either bypassing the little chrome guide and/or running the cables instead via the right front fork - behind the front fork.

Personally I like Baron / Beach bars as they are low and wide which I think is a real good look for the Drifter.

was looking at changing my stock bars on my 2001 and wondering opinions on what you guys might have that gives a more aggressive look.
I'm not looking to mess with stock cable length if i don't have to.
might change the risers as well.
looking at a set of Baron Star bars, but i don't know if they give a aggressive look to the bike.
your opinions would be appreciated.
looking at lover rise or stock rise as not to stretch cables.
