Metal screw in the exhaust pipes?

As I said in my previous posting those bolts don't show on any part diagram I've seen. the bolt is right between the two 92170a colar on the diagram, straight underneath the pipe. I was under the impression that it serve no purpose, or maybe it is just plugging a hole to drain condensation????? But when I saw the other one near the top of the second pipe......I was confused!!

  2304 right now so in the morning I'll have to go and look at mine see if it is the same as a stock set up. I have all the other stuff on my roadhouse.

Forgot to mention - be very careful not to twist off the bolts.  In other words, the impact method is just to get the bolt to spin fast - if they DO tighten, you have to stop right away, or you could twist off the bolt.  Esp. if they're small.  The way it works is just quick on/off, on/off.

Yes I'm talking about an 800 stock exhaust. No picture available fo a few days. Those screws are 10mm hex head, with a lock washer. They are not listed in the exploded view of any manual. I've tried the pry method without any success. Will have to try the impact wrench method. It doesn't seem to tie anything inside not even to a bolt. I did not think ther was anything inside the pipe needing to be fasten? But never hopened those to see.

Are you speaking of stock exhaust?  Mine is hanging off the bike in storage, I can't look at it.  But I'm guessing the screws you speak of hold the baffles or some other internal components in place.  What type of heads are on these screws?  Hopefully, they're hex heads?

If you can't get inside to hold the "nut"  they're turning in (or whatever threaded piece is turning) then I have a tip that could help.  If they're turning inside, then perhaps if you tried to tighten them with an impact wrench (if they're hex heads) or a drill (if they're by chance phillips).  The idea is to try to spin them fast enough to get them tp tighten into the "nut".  Sometimes you have to repeatedly start/stop the impact -  the sudden starting to turn is what makes the bolt turn in the nut, rather than the nut just turning with the bolt.

Another idea is to somehow pry on the head of the bolt/screw while you tighten it.  The pressure you put on the "nut" can sometimes hold it in place while the bolt/screw turns, and thereby tightening it.

It might help if you take a couple of photographs, one close up and one from a distance with an arrow pointing to the location..then someone with an 800 and the same exhaust can look at theirs..

Can someone tell me the use of the metal screw in the exhaust pipe. There are two, one in each, the front cylinder and back cylinder pipes. The one on the front pipes is underneath the horizontal part of the pipe in between the two colar that are holding the heat shield. It is really on the underside of the pipe. The one on the back pipe is less obvious. It's near the muffler just beside the rearest colar of the heat shield, you can see it by looking from above the pipe.

The reason that I ask all this is that one of thoses screw has come loose and is vibrating randomly. It is so noisy that for two days I was sure that I had a problem with my transmission. I tried to remove the screw but it's turning loose in place without coming out. I tried pulling while unscrewing but to no avail. I was thinking about cutting the head off but that would leave me with loose parts in the exhaust that I would have to remove. Tought about soldering in place.......but would like to know the use beforehand.

Sorry for the long post for such a tiny but noisy problem!
