This "smog stuff" if you mean the evap emission control system it was only fitted to the Calif bikes, so you probably have a bike that was first sold in the USA and then became a grey import to the UK in 2004..page 1 item 3 of your V5C should say if it was registered overseas and the year of manufacture.

It is a model 99 or 00 but it can be first registered in 2004. I have a 99, first registered in 2003. Sat at the dealer for a couple of years.

Good info on smog stuff... coasters are used if you remove the reed valves. You really don't want leakage.

It may have been a grey import from the USA, you can find out from the VIN number. the 2004 number should be JKBVNAR1*4A010001 and up.

The British numbers for 1999 start at JKBVNT50JJA000001 and up

The USA numbers for 1999 start at JKBVNAJ1*XA000001 and up

The J2 stopped in 2001

The R1 was 2001

The R2 was 2002

The R3 was 2003

The R4 was 2004

Then it is a 2000 model that didn't get sold until 2004.  (J2's are 2000 model year, a 2004 would be an R3 in the U.S. ....I think it's the same everywhere)

quick update according to the v5 it is a vn1500-j2 but was first registered in september 2004

Am I seeing things, or is that a '99 or 2000...'01 and later have an electronic speedo, 5 gal. tank (no seam) and lots of chrome.
The VIN plate is located on the down tube, not the head stock.there is a black plastic cover over the neck of the frame..nice ride, but I really think your year is wrong.

ill have a look into it as the reg is a 54 [2004] uk plate not sure if different in the uk, but ill do some research and see what i can dig up. i thought the same to be honest

I disabled the air injection on my '01 by removing the air intake hose running from the airbox on the right side and putting a half inch plastic cap on the air switching valve sitting on the front cylinder head...took about a minute to do. My W650 has the identical set up, so I did the same thing for that one, too

That's gotta be a '99 or '00.  Has a speedo cable coming down the right fork, silver engine casings, and no bumperette's on the rear.  Unless that bike has been RADICALLY rebuilt to resemble a blackout bike, that's no '04.

sorry forgot the photo :)

this is my bike before i put the longshots and power commander on

the reed valves i was confusing with the smog stuff.... i removed the smog stuff and my longshots exhaut sound changed quite a lot which i was expecting but the whistling etc was really odd... if i take them off again ill do a video of the sound it was making and upload it..

but im thinking of getting maybe a baron big air kit and the removing the smog stuff again and see if that makes a difference

When I got my bike it had V&H pipes on it, but they backfired on deceleration and sometimes between shifts.  The gaskets on the pipes were fine, so I decided to marble it ( http://www.gadgetjq.com/smogstuffremove.htm ).  Worked great!  Marble has been in there since 2008.  Added a small hose clamp on each side of the marble to make sure it stayed put.

Wow..First post..no introduction just bang right in there..

Reed valves..I can't remember any reed valves as such, Idle speed control valves maybe?

If I take anyting apart in these modern days of digital cameras I take photos from every angle, it costs nothing and I can put everything back exactly as I found it, I even take photos of diagrams I draw to help me out..

so..any photos..

Oh and welcome to the forum.

John.

hi all

this is my first post so be nice :)

i have got a 2004 VN1500 drifter and absoloutely love it... ive recently added V&H Longshots and a power commander and it runs great guns

i decided to remove the reed valves today and using the redd valve as a template i made some valve plates :)

fitted them onto the bike removed the old pipework etc and it ran ok for about 5 minutes yet now for some reason when i accelerate and ease off there is a wierd whistling type of sound coming from the exhaust..

didnt like it at all so put the valves back on and no more whistling..

any ideas

cheers :)
