Yeah, that's a percentage of  the total charged... product, packaging, tax, shipping, etc. I can tell from experience it can eat away profit quickly. Apparently Visa and MC have been sued and you may start seeing surcharges for using credit cards.

Well, we've already been paying for it.  Now they have an excuse to charge us twice for it.

...and the cost of a merchant account can get out of hand very easily.

That's for sure, Chief.  Especially for high-dollar, low-margin items.  You have to remember the merchant has to pay the percentage on the whole purchase, including the actual cost of the merchandise and the profit, and even the sales tax.  I found this can add up to a BIG percentage of the profit.....

Sometimes I think the only ones making any money these days are the banks.

No Worries

chief

You have ALWAYS paid that fee in the pricing of the merchandise. The merchant pays 2-5% to the merchant provider for you to use a credit card. They had to find someplace to make that up. Often its in the purchase price. It isn't a "law" its the rules of Visa, MC, AMex etc. that either allow or disallow the merchant to be upfront and tell you they are giving you a discount for cash, or a fee for credit cards. We have several stores and the cost of a merchant account can get out of hand very easily.

WOW C/C's at least we get our quarter back when we return the cart.....man you Yanks are a hard crowd to use C/C's.....man I'll stay north of the 49th.....or north of 55 even better. Credit Cards...man that is hard core....for a cart....

And now they've just passed a law that lets the merchants pass on the 3% CC fee directly to consumers.  Well, guess what?  That's the end of using CCs for a lot of people now.

I won't shop at Aldi's... they don't want to GIVE me a cart to shop, I'll go where they do.

If you get there and want a free cart you just have to wait for Ratman..

John.

I totally agree Rat...If we all did just 1 nice deed a day. The world would be a better place.

only one place in town that does not charge to "rent" the carts....lol..and it is the same idea. But when you are taking the cart back give it to some one and watch their face as they try to hand you the quarter and you tell them to just take it and be good.

Random acts of kindness............we can all do them and then watch people..react.....

We have a grocery called Aldis. They have a quarter slot that releases the cart chained to the one in front of it. when you return your cart it gives you the quarter back. Keeps their overhead low and thei lot free of stray carts. They only have 2-4 people working in the whole store ant any time. Its a pretty good buisness plan. the prices are reasonable and the products are good. I save about 1/4 by shopping there.

Pay for shopping carts? I have never heard of that before. Ever. That's ridicules.

Our carts only take credit cards.  You're out of luck if you don't have a CC.  I guess bring your own fold-up cart, which some of us do.  Me, because I can't see paying to rent a cart to buy stuff from someone.

Heard that of people putting money in meters and getting in trouble for that .

Along almost the same lines at the grocery store with the food carts and you have to pay for them and then get your money back. I have finished using the cart and handed it off to someone and said just pass it on. I am wondering how many people get to use my cart with my quarter or did the person right after me take my quarter and run...lol.....

We must have better carts here, ours take £1 ..about $1.50...

John.

Something to do for fun...

When i was a teenager, i worked for a grocery store called Piggly Wiggly ( i know, Laugh it up)

for entertainment at the night shift we would superglue a quarter to the floor near the registers.

You will be surprised at what people will do, the will try to pick it up, then kneel down to get better leverage, maybe kick it, i have seen a lady in a mink coat on her knees with a key trying to pry it off the floor.

they might not do it for a peen or nickel, but almost EVERYBODY will try to get the quarter..

well worth the .25¢ for entertainment on lunch or breaktime..

Just an added idea for the retired people to liven up their day.

Post it on youtube, get a bunch of hits, maybe sponsorship and a little cash..

Hahaha. There was a old lady here in town a few years back who made the news. She was putting coins in the expired meters so the cops couldn't write tickets. She was ticketed or arrested for it. I don't remember which. But the cops were kinda on mankinds craplist while that was going on. Poor little old lady being picked on by the police.  ::)

I'll be doing that once my medical reveiw board sits, cool somthing to look forward to......

Working people frequently ask retired people what

they do to make their days interesting.

Well, for example, the other day, Marilyn my wife and I

went downtown and visited a shop.

When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.

We went up to him and I said, 'Come on, man,

how about giving a senior citizen a break?'

He ignored us and continued writing the ticket.

I called him an asshole . He glared at me and started

writing another ticket for having worn-out tires.

So Marilyn called him a shit head.  He finished the

second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.

Then he started writing more tickets.

This went on for about 20 minutes.

The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote.

Just then our bus arrived, and we got on it

and went home.

We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired.

It's important at our age.
