Growing up, nothing i rode had them either, My first bike with a clutch switch (and side stand switch, and vehicle down sensor) was a 1984 kawasaki gpz zx550a1 (predecessor to the ninja).

The little "Lurch" that happens when you try starting it in gear is natural to me, it never scares me, and it only jumps about 3 or 4 inches, except for harleys, all my bikes have done it...

Same as a car, My first vehicle was a 1964 scout, no clutch switch, so get in, clutch down, hit the key, just a normal rhythm.

On the Bike, sit down, turn the key, clutch in, listen for the pump, make sure the lights go out, then hit the button, once it is running, get the green light, then let the clutch out and warm up for a minute or 2.

I always park my bike in gear, and rolled forward until it is stopped by the compression of the engine.
That way you don't come back to find it had rolled forward and fell over.

I have never been one to start the bike, then get dressed/strapped in while it is idling, I will start it, see how it feels, listen to it run, run through my mental checklist, then go.

Just how I have always done it..

None of my H-Ds had them, or side stand switches, either....

LOL... and I do recall wondering why I couldn't turn left outta my drive way... It gets to be routine - kickstand up... take off... but sometimes "routine" means "unthinking"... I know I left my kickstand down a few times.  AND... tried to start in gear... Of course that habit... depress clutch... has stuck with me.

unless I die do not plan on getting rid of bike, so in that case not too worried about it. I have read about dyno's before and after bypass there was an ignition change. They were newer bikes so am hoping ours is not as smart, lol.

I am putting my switch wires inside the handlebars and want to eliminate the wires for the clutch switch. I always pull the clutch in when I start my bike anyways. From reading other sites about this there are 2 thoughts on it, 1 being that the ECU changes the timing and the other not. Has anyone done this? Some have put a switch somewhere else on the bike to use as they start bypass which I would not have a problem with, but if not needed would rather not. The problem with the wires are that they are outside the switch housing so not easy way to get them thru the handle bars w/o another hole.

I don't know as much as I should about the Drifters yet but here's my take on the clutch switch..it is a safety device and should be left on for the new user should you ever sell the bike...The purpose of the clutch switch is to prevent the bike from running away out of control should you accidently start the engine with the bike in gear... the clutch switch does not come into use if you start the bike in neutral so I can't really see how it would affect the timing...Without looking at the circuit diagram I think the clutch switch is just a way of linking the circuit to ground.

Anyone feel free to jump in and correct me on this if I am wrong..

John.
