fender interchangeability

WORD OF CAUTION:

While the whole rear fender assembly is interchangeable from the 1500 to the 800, the fender stay is not.  The bolt holes are in different places on the fender.

As far as I know all years are interchangeable... the only difference is color... 800's on 800's and 1500's on 1500's.

How interchangeable are the fenders between model years? More specifically, are the rear fenders on 99's and 2000's interchangeable? Plus any other knowledge in that area would be helpful. thanks.
