   I think it was the tip from 45 super cool dude he is that made me decide to do it in one long peice. I have a small rubber mallet, that I used too. I removed the cluster as per 45's instruction, remove the two top ones frist and then the bottom one, the plate with the lights will lift up and you have two quick disconnects to let you remove it all the way and clean up around it. I then started at the top on one side and used my hands to put it on and then used the hammer to tap it into place and make sure it was seated deep enough into the moulding.
When I got close to the tab at the bottom O then figured out were the cut had to be made and then made it a bit smaller, I also removed the bolts holding the tank in palce and this gives you enough room to jsut move the tan kso you can get the moulding around it and tap it into place with the hammer.

Rat man showed the right way to do it in the second photo, if you don't, it MAY come un glued in the heat. (Voice of experience here) it did it the first time I put it on my 1500 tank.

As to the cluster, there is a screw at the bottom on the face that holds it down, (the other 2screws hold the 3lights and plate to the cluster).

The front of the cluster is hooked into the crossmember  of the tank.

Great job,bud.I have a small piece left over to see if i can mimic that...if not...i can live with what I have now.How do you take the cluster off the tank?I just lifted the gasket going around it enough to get the trim underneath.Glad you decided to stick with the black trim....looks sweet,dude.

  I have a stock tank so if yours is stock then they should be the same. So take off what you did, and start over...lol....

When you get to the flange/tab what ever that holds the tank down under the seat, take a really sharp knife and cut the under part of the trim off leaving a very small over hang, for the under part to hold to and the adhisive will hold it.

Definately the black,my man.....no doubt about it!Honestly RATMAN,after seeing you do it I toyed around with it and put a piece around the tank on MA-DEUCE....man it looks sweet against that ODG color.I had to run 2 pieces (1 for each side)Don't know if your tank is different,but i have the lip on mine to bolt to the frame...Thanks for sharing your idea!

Black has my vote; the tank edge looks unfinished as is; chrome makes it stand out like a sore thumb, (IMHO) black makes it blend in and gives a finished look. But, your opinion carries more weight than all ours put together.

45 thanks I have it off and see where to start and it will be one continuous piece around the tank.

never planned on around the fenders as the fender guards add enough for me....

I didn't like it around the fenders, but definitely around the tank.

Word of experience, remove the speedo housing, start there, and run around the tank in 1 solid run, ending under the speedo housing.

If you can, i don't know if the rear of the 800cc tank has the flange or not near the nut that holds it on.

A friend with a 800 classic, put the chrome edging around his tank since he has more chrome than me.
he also added the edging around the windshield.
that i surely didn't like.

But it is his bike, and he didn't ask me..

The black edge...just don't do it in chrome...wouldn't fit in at all.

  thanks all and I have been mulling this over since I bought the bike, it is just one of them things that it is nice to listen to others, and yes opinons are like armpits or the other thing we all have and they all can stink, but also sometimes it is nice to pause and listen to others, because some people have smart ideas and some people are respected and thier opinions mean a lot to others......wow that came from me.....

You know what they say.......Opinions are like armpits, and some of them stink!

Personally, I like the blacked out edge.  I've always thought that an edge on a tank looks "unfinished", or maybe like "standard equipment", whereas a finished edge, be it rounded off as in the case of the 1500's, or even a simple blackout paint job on the edge looks more "clean", or even "custom".

In the end though, it's your ride.

It may help you to decide if you take a large pic of your whole bike, then save it and make a second copy and spend some time in Microsoft Paint, or some similar program, and look at the change as a whole, instead of just looking at a portion of the bike.  It's hard to gauge the overall effect that way.

Personally I like the black edge, It lends to the transition to other blacked out areas on the bike and softens the edge of the bottom of the tank. There's a similar black edging on the air cover as well if I'm not mistaken which in a subtle way would mirror it... However if I've learned anything here on the site it's... If you like it that's all that matters brother.
