I broke down and bought a Schumacher Maintainer.  I probably paid too much for what I got but it does the job.  I made a network of three lines so I can keep up the charge in two bikes and my rider lawn mower.

My son bought a couple of $9.99 Harbor Freight battery tenders.  He plugs one in on each bike.  He's been using them for three years without a problem.
