so I went out on a nice long ride from tampa to dayton to jax fl.. and back. I ran 85mph and my milage was 42mpg which is 12mpg better then may last road trip. now Iam going to see this week on my daily commute to work which I usually run about 70mph and see how my milage is. other then that the bike did great I can feel the difference on the hwy with the new clutch

Yeah, not much you can do about the lever... make sure you have the dial set... it gives the illusion of more lever play... !

so I took the bike apart last night all went smooth as butter.. very surprised how easy this was even after having to take the frame apart and all... so the issue was the spring plate..it was grooved really bad, i checked the plates and friction plates and they were still good..but I still replaced the friction plates..so everything is new. the only difference now is the clutch disengages like 1/8 inch from the grip..took a few minutes to get use to it. so I even bleed the clutch again and made a little difference.

thanks for all the info everyone... I also order a manual from Green manuals off ebay.. good guy he sends you a disk and gives you a link to download it... my neighbor has a mini car shop ..he works on cars out of his house.. so he is going to let me use his impact.. so this will go smooth..lol

THANKS EVERYONE..@56 drifter I seen that duo clutch on the mods section.. @ rawv yes I have been reading up on everything..it seems like for weeks damm eyes are crossed..lol.. I have a mechanical background and my wife is an MMI graduate.. HD of course..but she still likes to turn a wrench.. I purchased a manual from green manuals on line. just going to pick parts up on monday.. so next sunday I will do the work

Hey Vagabondjay..If you look in the diagram their are some steel washers they arent flat they have a very slight cup to them so you have to watch how you put them back on ..My clutch lever is alittle bit harder to pull but their is no slippage at all ...I just went to Gadgets fix it page and followed the clutch rebuild on his web page very helpful... The hardest thing was getting the nut off in the center of the clutch after I got that off it was a piece of cake.

Thunder Manufacturing makes some aftermarket (better than stock) steel clutch plates.
It's called the Duo clutch and it DRAMATICALLY improves the power to the rear wheels and all you have to do is look at the reviews. It part # is T-1500 DC...hope this helps.

ok got it.. thanks again for the help...going to order the stuff on Monday should have it by wend and do the job next Sunday.. I have a run to Gary Indiana...going to be a great ride.. I took the bike to  Pensacola fl  this past weekend.. clutches does fine after a 2 mile warm up ride. but I just want to have a new one for that Indiana run.

Give them the part numbers on the page I gave you above.  They ARE the most current. If you give them the bike and year you will get the current spring, but only ONE holder. The two holder setup helps prevent premature stress failure of the spring. The two holders fit together in the same space as the single holder.

ok explain the two holders... that's what is throwing me off. I see in the diagrams a spring holder, so what is the difference in the 2??
also so let me just clear my head.. and ask this.  so if I walk in the dealer and ask for clutch spring,friction plates and two spring holders that I will get the most current parts?? my main concern is that I get a clutch spring plate that isn't going to give out after 6000 miles or 10k miles... I had 70k miles on my vtx and I was the original owner and I never put a clutch in that bike!!and it was still going strong. and from everything I have read about the clutch problems I don't wont to have to go into the case in a month or two. and thanks in advance for all the help and answers

They are also active Kawasaki parts so you can get them from any dealer, or from a discount MC parts place like Ronayers.com. They are about $8 each online.

You need to measure the clutch pack before you spend a bunch on steel plates. These plates come in 3 sizes which have to be placed as required to ensure the pack meets the operating spec.

Usually, you don't need them. I replaced the friction plates, upgraded to two holders and replaced the spring plate with the one currently used on all 1500/1600's. I didn't need to replace the steel plates.

@rawv..sounds like a plan.. I went by the dealer today and for the friction plates,gasket and clutch spring it was 171.00 out the door.

I've got a 99 1500 and the clutch was slipping bad I replaced the fibers..springs and the two spacer washers also the case gasket it was an easy fix easier than I thought and it runs great not a bit of clutch slip..the steels were fine I just scuffed them up with some sandpaper to take the glaze off and that was it.

Did you look in the BRAKES and CLUTCH section of the Accessories database on the web site?  Last time I looked Barnett Performance had a kit...

so I am gearing up to put a clutch in the bike..has 54k miles on it. so I found the links to the clutch part number and what not.. so  I am doing a Google search for a clutch kit.. all you will find is the friction plates. SO my question does no one sell a complete kit together?? friction plate,steel plate,spring and gaskets?? seems like a pain in the ass to order from here and there and then the shipping will kill you.. the only place I found was sherms gorilla clutch, I sent them an email to see about the gasket and have gotten no reply? and from what I am seeing all the clutch's are the same in the vulcan1500 and 1600.. and also from what I get out of this you don't replace the steel friction plates unless they are worn. next to the part numbers it has Ar= as required  and since they don't come with the kit anywhere on the planet that's how it comes across
