Book value, Loan value, and what they ACTUALLY sell for.

When looking for a Drifter I subscribed to several buyer search engines. I averaged two to four fresh ads a day.  Face with those kind of numbers I can tell you that without a doubt Drfters are going for way more than any of the "books" rate them.  Hard to understand where in the heck these guys get their "average wholesale/retail" pricing.  Granted during the riding season bikes go for premium but we're easily looking at a couple grand difference between the bike and the book.  Seems like someone has their thumb on the scale.

I know Chief. Hard to let it go. The parts are worth the asking price. I just imagine it wont last long. It is listed on the Vulcan owners group website.  I read 45 Bravos story and thought Id pass it on. Might be a once in longtime deal.

I have the AMA bike value guide on my android... (they have an app for the iphone too). These are based on the "Black Book" vehicle appraisals used by dealers.

That 800 shows an average retail of $4770, with a trade-in of $3680... so its a deal... almost too good to be true!

Oh no, you got it wrong.

I already have my drifter, my friend is the one that is having a hard time coughing up the difference in between the book value and the actual selling price.

I keep telling him he will run across one at a give away price.( the link to the Arizona one proves it)
He just has to wait and find it.

For example:

I wanted an iPad (yea I drank the apple cool aid many years ago) but I can't justify the $500 price for something just to sit on the couch and surf with.

Well, 2 weeks ago, I did some computer work for a guy, and he gave me a nice HP laptop that had a virus as payment. I cleaned it, installed windows 7 on it and Microsoft office (total investment? 4 hours time) after playing with it for a few days, I decided it was too big and heavy (17 inch screen) for my likes.

So, Thursday I ran an ad on Craigslist for a laptop, wanted to trade for an iPad, just to see what nibbles I could get..
Friday I traded for a 2nd generation iPad, they were happy, and I am happy.
I have almost $0 invested in the iPad

If you look hard enough you can find the means to get what you want..

Later guys.

I know what you are talking about Chief, when I wanted to buy my Harley while stationed in Germany the Military bank would not fund me, so I went to my local German bank and got the funds from them and paid them back and just left the minimal amount in my Canadian bank account that was needed to kep it open.

45 if you really want it and it is what you need to make your life complete then you have to wait for it, I waited 3 years for the right Drifter to "drift" into my sights. Time and patiente was the answer, just hat to wait and bid my time for the right deal.

GPS is not to get you THERE but rather to get you home from THERE

PERSONAL loan...

Back when I used to buy on credit and wanted a vintage vehicle or motorcycle, I'd have to resort to personal loans over regular car loans. Back in the old days, there were few places to get a motorcycle loan. I recall trying to buy a brand new Harley (before they had their own finance company). The Navy Credit Union told me they had a cap on motorcycle loans and that $6900 was way to much... that I needed to buy a "cheaper" bike. As a result, I borrowed half the amount on a personal loan, and came up with the rest myself. I subsequently closed out the NFCU account.
The book value is not going to be close to the actual value for these bikes.

'02 Vulcan Drifter 1500

My friend saw a drifter yesterday at a dealership for sale.
1999, 1500, Custom paint, 2 seats, leather  bags, 30,000 miles.
The dealer wants $4900, he called his bank, the book is 2950 retail, the loan value is 1150.
A long way from $4,900..

I told him that is on par with what the drifters are going for from what I read here on the forum.
I also told him It is like buying a classic car, the blue book on say a 69 mustang is no where what they are actually getting for them..
And the 99' Drifters are the same way, they are in an awkward spot, just old & rare enough to command a higher price tag, but just common enough to be under the general motorcycle public radar..

He was disgusted, saying he old never be able to get a drifter, but I think I have him warmed to the idea of just putting some money back, and waiting.

Eventually, one will pop up in his price range, he just has to be patient, and not jump on the first one that crops up.

So, my question is (and I think I already know the answer)

How do you feel about paying almost double the appraised value of the bike just own one?
