TC: I hope you DO like them, and I hope you have good luck with them! I hate to recommend something to someone, cause I know everyone's expectations are different. I'll say it again, they seemed to cut the harshness down on mine, made them a lot more bearable on longer rides. There's not a lot to them, but there's just enough to make them an asset. As to the OP, I really like the Hard Kromes, they're a huge improvement over the Jetson-mobile buzz. I still have the original exhaust, and I've put it back on one time before, but just had to go back to the Hard Krome pipes for the sound. Now that I've got the baffles in I doubt I'll ever go back to OEM. *****Of course, if I'd find a reasonably priced sidecar to go on the bike, I'd probably put it back on for the sake of the passenger!!****!!  Got the Smartpartz baffles installed today. They don't quiet it down a lot but it is much more enjoyable now. I don't know how to explain what they do but it seems to be a less harsh exhaust note now.
I really didn't think they were going to do anything as all they are is an insert with a flat piece of metal down the center. They were worth the money though.

 I emailed Smartpartz and sent them a pic of my pipes.
They got back to me within the hour. They say my pipes are a variation of the Hard Krome Strippers.
The difference being mine are staggered.
I ordered a set of  baffles from them and will post how I like them when they arrive and are installed.

Mine were dealer installed, but I do believe they are the Classics. Its been a long time since I looked them up. They've such small baffles in them I  don't know why they even bothered! But, I like them now with the Smartpartz baffles. I'll have to see if I can retrieve my pics off a flashdrive to post. Greg

 I have Hard Krome pipes on my 2001 800. They are stagered and were on the bike when I bought it so I don't know what model they are. They do have removable baffles though. I have emailed Hard Krome 3 times and have yet to get a response. Soooooooooo, I don't think their customer service is worth a crap. But I do like the look of the pipes. They are loud even with the baffles in.

Thanks so much for the info, it was very helpful.  I think I'm going to give the HK pipes a try.  Forgot to mention that the ones I was looking at were the American Classic model...not sure if those are the same that you have?

I've got an '06 800 with the HK pipes like you're talking about. I like them, good sound, but they're loud. They had a resonance to them that literally hurt MY ears. More specifically my right ear. It would ring for a while after a longer ride, even with a 3/4 helmet. So, I put a set of Smartpartz baffles in them. Still loud, but doesn't seem to have the harsh resonance like before, and seems to be easier on my ear. They end about 1/2" behind the signal lights. If I could just get the original muffler to sound like these, I'd put THAT back on in a heartbeat. Love the look of the original, but always thought it made the bike sound like the Jetson's spacecar. Hi,

I am new to the biking world, having just bought a used 2001 Drifter 800.  I would like to replace the stock exhaust with a good after market exhaust.  I've looked at the Hard Krome 2.5" straight pipes and they seem like a good choice given the double walled design to limit bluing.  Has anyone seen/heard these set of pipes on an 800 drifter before?  If so, what did you think?  How far back did the pipes run ie. to the tailights etc.

Any other suggestions as far as pipes go.  I want something fairly loud and beefy sounding.
