I pulled the broken speedo cable this PM and it didn't break at the bend but lower.  Caused by the incorrect installation of the cable by the shop.  I'll try another Drifter cable (ordered) and if that breaks I'm going to have one custom made that doesn't have any "bends".

I got a 99 Nomad speedo cable straight end into the wheel part and curved end into speedometer. Works good so far
The funny thing is that the cable that was on the bike when I bought it was just the opposite, curved end was into the wheel and straight end was in the speedometer

I just got my 99' 1500 back home (2600+ mile ride) and broke two speedo cables.  The last one was off a Classic.  Classic doesn't have the bend at the bottom.  The first cable broke at the bottom bend and the second broke at the top bend.  So I might just have to look at the Nomad or Mean Streak cables.

A lot of folks have used the nomad cable to resolve the breakage problem.

You know, if you put the curved tube in a vice and straighten it a bit, it'll take the stress section and make the cable turn more freely.  Otherwise, have the dealer pull the std. cable and then a Mean Streak or others and compare length and the curved section.  I recall the others are longer too, allowing for greater radii in bendy sections.
Had mine replaced under warranty at 20,000 miles and, at 74,000, it's still doing fine.  Lubed the bottom when I changed the front tire last fall.

I've been looking at different posts and still don't know :'(
The threads commoming out of the hub of the front wheel is straight
the end of the cable that goes into that
has an aluminum casing with an upward bend
I'll have to order either the drifter cable or something better tomorrow, as I've already run out of gas once...lol
for others if your speedo brakes the auto shut of for the signals doesn't work either

There is advice from Chief in these pages about using another model's cable.  It doesn't have the sharp turn behind the front wheel like the Drifter's does and that must lessen wear.  Look around and you'll find the part no.  I think it might have been the Mean Streak one.
