Painted lids are used by EVERY professional rider... ie check out any superbike or motocross rider's lid.

The type of paint used is important regardless of what you are painting - it has to be compatible with the surface/material being painted.

So, nothing wrong with painting, just use the right paints and solvents.

you have to be VERY careful when painting a helmet.  The outter layer of the helmet is part and parcel of the safety of the helmet itself, by preventing punctures and intrusion into the foam interior, and many car/professional paints, and clear coats will break down the compound this layer is made of, therefore compromising significantly the safety of your helmet in an accident.

Don't even get me started on helmet age......

you are right! in fact the painted helmets I have are just for shows, normally I ride with a proper helmet
