I buy the K&N by the case... since I can use the KN-204 on my drifter and my goldwing it works for me.

The Kaw filter is fine, never heard anyone having a problem with it. I just prefer the K&N. When I looked into filters several years ago, these came out on top.

"Most expensive first"...  actually its "BEST" first.

Any retailer worth his salt wants to make customers happy. Happy customers come back, spend more, and send their friends. If you angle for one fast, fat sale, you end up losing in the end. SO... the wise retailer provides the customer with the BEST first. Then if they choose something else the customer has only himself to blame.

PLUS... returns, time spent dealing with problems and bad press end up costing a lot of money.

It happens many times, the BEST is also the most EXPENSIVE... but not always.

HiFlo is a brand of oil filter.  K&N has for years been viewed as the better of them, no idea why, I just sell a ton of them, but then its retail theory at its finest.  someone asks for an oil filter for their whatever, I go find them the most expensive one available.  We make more money that way, if they ask for a cheaper/different one, I am glad to get it, but we are taught to ALWAYS assume people want the most expensive one, that people want the nice things first, and let them talk it down from there.  I know thats a horrible thing to say, but thats how retail sales works, and 30 years in business says our boss knows his stuff.

Thanks
I'll be atempting my first oil change within a couple of weeks, I presume they are better than the ones from the dealer or does it matter?

Thanks in Advance

the K&N p/n is KN-303 for 1999 800...

99 and 00 use this larger filter... the rest use kn-204...

303 has an internal relief valve set at 18.13psi while the 204 has 14.5psi... and 204 is 10mm shorter.

we quit carrying the Frams this past year, their quality just isn't what it used to be.  We find good results with the K&N and HiFlo with the biggest difference being the nut on the bottom of the K&N for ease of install and removal, and only a couple dollars difference in price.

That's the filter Fram says works with the 800...

I haven't heard a lot of good things about fram filters for a while, but I don't recall hearing this sort of problem. I use K&N filters almost exclusively nowadays, but do have a Kaw filter as well.

How long did you allow to run?

i did my my oil changes on my bikes this weekend changed my harley 1st no issues then changed my 2000 drifter 800 with kaw. semi syn 20w 50 and a fram 6017a filter no issues, then changed oil on my 2001 drifter 800 with kaw. semi syn 20w50 and a fram 6017a started it up and both oil and temp light stayed on, i shut it down dumped the oil checked the oil screen to make sure i put it in correct and everything was ok. so i put another new fram 6017a filter and another 3.3 qts of kaw 20w50 oil and started it up again still both lights stayed on shut it down again. then i took off the fram and put the old filter on checked oil level then started it up and both lights went off in a second. (i did pre prime my filters as i always do) so today i went to dealer and bought a factory filter and another 4 qts oil ,dumped the oil again pre primed filter and fired it up lights went off in a second. every thing seems ok. just wondering if anyone has run into this with fram filters or did i lose prime on the oil pump? bike has about 3500 miles on it.  i have been using fram 6017a filters on my 2000 800 with about 10k miles on it and 8 oil changes in never had this or any issue.  has any one seen or herd of this, i have been around bikes for a long time but this baffled me...
