I had a bit of the same problem, but my mechanic is a wizzard with stuff like that, I have an 03 800.  So we ordered in the ones for a regular 800 Vulcan classic, but it took a vice, 4 mechanics and a come-along but we got them on, and I wanted them a bit bigger than the ones I have seen on normal Drifters, just in case it did go over, and I am really happy with the look and feel safer with the extra protection. Knowing a mechanic that isn't afraid to live outside the box a little bit is turning out to be pretty beneficial.
