remove the right hand cover then remove the coolant reservoir, there is a round thing, that is the fuel injector power relay..the yellow/red wire goes to the in line 15a fuse, the fuse gets it's supply from the ignition switch.

This fuse does not supply the relay coil but the injectors and heres how it works

one side of the relay coil is connected to ground (pin 2) the other side of the coil is connected to the ICU (pin 1)  when the ICU calls for fuel it puts 12v dc at pin 1

Pins 3 and 4 are the switch part of the relay and when the 12v dc appears at pin 1, pins 3 and 4 connect together allowing the 12v from the yellow/red wire to connect to the white red wire..then the injector fires.

John.

So could a bad 15a fuse here cause this problem?

OMFG!! I have been having this problem for over a year now---I take to the shop and several hundred $$ later they tell me its fixed for a few months it's good then won't start---in garage now for almost 5 weeks...I also came to the conclusion that there's no fuel coming from the injectors...your story is practically word-for-word what I've been experiencing...uncanny---so what 'computer' am I supposed to swap out? Because honestly I'm at my wits end---I can't tell you how much $$ I've spent with NOBODY being able to FIX this once and for all... I never feel confident when I take it out---went to So. Carolina from Florida and got stuck there...changed the plugs and prayed the whole way home it would start every time I got gas...I'm willing to try anything at this point---BIKE WEEK IS COMING UP!

Just an update.  First I want to thank everyone for their comments.  It really did help me during my diagnosis.  I ended up getting a noid light tester and came to conclusion it was my computer.  I purchased one from Ebay which was an exact fit.  Plugged it in and PRESTO! My bike fired right up and has been running flawless.  Sounds and runs much better now.  My charging system is now functioning correctly as well.  It was a weird series of events but I'm happy to say I'm back on the road again.  Thanks again.

When you say you replaced your 'computer', do you mean the ECU itself?
Just curious, 'cause that way if I ever have issues with mine the way you experienced, I know what to start ck'ing FIRST!!...hey thanks.

Well done..

A nice bit of fault finding and you probably saved yourself a lot of money by doing it yourself..

A lot of people couldn't have fixed that.

John.

UPdate!!!!  Still need some help.  I thought I had blown the injectors so I replaced them and still no fuel from the injectors.  The pump is working, starting is working.  Again I can spray starter fluid and it will start right up but no fuel coming from the injectors.  Does this mean its a bad ECU?  Or is there a relay or fuse in between the ECU and injectors?  I've checked all the fuses and they are all fine.  Thanks.

Honestly, I can only think of a few things here...

1) I assume the fuel is good.
2) make sure the injectors are getting power
3) make sure they aren't clogged.

All of this assumes it is actually the injectors.

It bothers me that a new battery would spontaneously discharge and then you have these problems. Can you try a new/different battery to test if that is a problem? So many things depend upon the proper electrical supply to function on these bikes.

There is a pretty reasonable test procedure in the Haynes manual 4B12 it goes on a bit but you can do shortcuts.

I ran the ECU test and no error codes popped up.  I had the fuel pump unplugged at one point and it gave the error 45 code for fuel pump but that went away when I plugged the pump back in.  I know it's weird to have a flooding problem at first but now no fuel is making it to the chambers.  Fuel is being pumped all the way to the injectors but the fuel stops there.  Guess I should check the relay.  I know I have spark - sprayed some starter fluid in the air chamber and it fires right up which leads me to believe the injectors are not firing.  This one def has me stumped.  Thanks for the help

I assume you did the ECU error check... per http://www.vulcandrifterriders.com/ECUFaultCodes.html. If there are injector problems that should tell you.

I'm not sure how you know the injectors aren't spraying fuel. You indicated a flooded condition previously. There is a relay for fuel injectors but the ECU test performed as noted above will tell you if there is a problem with the relay.

Combined with your battery problems it would lead me to looking at an electrical problem. Not much help... sorry.

Thought I would ask here.  Here's the scenario of what happened and now I'm stumped.
Went to crank the bike on Friday after work (been running great for the past 3 months no issues) and dead battery.  The battery was replaced 3 months ago and was brand new.  Bought a new battery, fired right up and drove it home.  I figured my stator/regulator was bad so I let it sit the night and would check in the morning.

Sat morn it fired right up so I pulled the negative side of the battery to see if the bike would keep running and it died instantly.  Re-connected the neg and it fired up.  So I decided to get a volt meter and check when I got home from work.  When I got home that afternoon I noticed I had left the kill switch in the on position and the key in the ignition but in the off position.  Went to fire it up - it would crank but not start.  It sputtered a few times so I gave some throttle and realized there was gas dripping from the muffler.  I tried to start a few more times and gas continued to drip out the muffler so I stopped.  Put the battery on charge for the eve and would try again on Sun.

Sun morn put the batt back on it would crank but not fire.  I got it to sputter for about 2 seconds and that was it.  Now it seemed there was no gas getting to the engine.  So over the past few days and tests here's my findings:

I have spark - It will fire with starter fluid in the air intake.
The fuel pump is pumping fuel and I hear it turn on when I power the bike and when I hit the start button
Fuel is clean and makes it to the injectors.
The injectors are not spraying fuel.
The ECU shows no errors and the FI light comes on for 2 sec and disappears when I power the bike.
If I unplug the fuel pump it reads error 45.
If I unplug the the other sensors or fuel injectors the error still reads 45.

Does anyone have any insight or same issues that were resolved.  Is this bad fuel pressure, injectors, ECU?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,
Dan
